Inside the backlash behind Madonna's 66th birthday bash as ancient location rumor spirals

Madonna is set to celebrate her 66th birthday, but rumors of an unusual party sparked fury among fans and experts.

The music legend was rumored to be inviting 500 guests to a blowout bash at Pompeii , the historical town that was destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius volcano. The excavation site does have an events area, specifically a stage, where they hold occasional performances, but activists were peeved by Madonna's alleged attempt to rent Teatro Grande amphitheater.

It wouldn't have been a cheap bill to front, either. For that number of attendees, the Times of London reported she'd be shelling out nearly $30,000. The mayor of Pompeii, Carmine Lo Sapio, was said to be fine with the alleged plan, saying that they are ready to "welcome the singer."

However, Michele Campisi, general secretary of the Italia Nostra heritage association, lashed out, saying: "Why does Madonna need to go to Pompeii? Is there not a more beautiful beach she could use? €30,000 is absurd. It’s like giving Pompeii away."

That being said, the rumors were later shut down by Pompeii officials. In a translated press release , they wrote: "Regarding the rumors circulating in the press these days about a 'mega-party' of an international celebrity with 500 guests in the excavations of Pompeii, as well as about an alleged rent of €30,000 for the Large Theatre, the Archaeological Park specifies that these are unfounded reports."

The Pompeii allegations lined up with the singer's other holiday plans surrounding her birthday. After all, she was reportedly on a yacht traveling down the Italian coast with stops in Naples and Capri. Now that the birthday party is off the tables, which was rumored to be hosting stars like Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, it's uncertain who Madonna will be ringing in her next year with, but she has been cozying up with her new boyfriend quite a bit lately.

In fact, he was spotted in Italy at her side. Body language expert Judi James previously commented to The Mirror about Akeem Morris' presence on a recent outing with the star. She said: "Akeem’s rigid, upright posture with the splayed chest does suggest pride in his date here but his enigmatic smile plus the way he’s crooked his arm like a rather old-fashioned gent does seem to de-personalise their togetherness signals."
