Dustin Johnson faces major LIV Golf problem as Pat Perez’s Saudi league future in doubt

Dustin Johnson could well be forced to revamp his 4Aces roster for 2025, with his long-time teammate Pat Perez facing relegation from LIV Golf.

Johnson led the 4Aces to the Team Championship during the league's maiden campaign in 2022, as well as leading the regular season in 2023 before falling just short in the season finale. Having dominated throughout year one and two, the Aces were tipped to enjoy more success in 2024.

Johnson and co however have struggled to make their mark this campaign, as they currently sit 10th in the season-long standings out of 13 teams, having failed to win once so far this term.

Individually things have been even worse for Johnson's teammate Perez, who finds himself in the dreaded drop zone in the individual year-long leaderboard. The bottom four finishers on the breakaway circuit come the end of the season are dumped from the league, and Perez currently occupies one of these spots with four rounds left to play.

Following this week's event at Greenbrier, Perez will have just one more event to avoid relegation in Chicago. His focus for now however will lie with Sunday's final round in West Virginia, with the former PGA Tour star left with plenty of work to do with 18 holes left to play.

Perez currently finds himself in a tie for 40th at three-under-par and will be relying on a faultless showing in Sunday's final round to help him in his quest to avoid the drop. The 48-year-old almost lost his spot on the LIV roster last campaign, having found himself in free agency after finishing 28th out of 50 players.

Perez was offered a reprieve by Johnson though, having been re-signed by the 4Aces for the 2024 season. “Couldn’t be more excited,” Perez said after being handed a contract extension to remain with the breakaway league “It’s phenomenal to remain a part of LIV. I’m very grateful."

Of his aims for this year, he added: "I want to see my teammates do well, too. Sure, I’d like to play well, win one of these things or at least have a look at it. But I want the team to win a bunch and then win the team championship, and then hopefully be a part of the team again in 2025.”

Things however have not gone to plan for both Perez and the 4Aces, as he is not the only member of Johnson's team staring relegation in the face. The man in the spot just above the drop zone is fellow 4Aces star Harold Varner III, who like Perez, has struggled to find his best form.

He too has plenty of work to do heading into Sunday's final round at the Greenbrier. Varner III is one of just six players over-par in the field, sitting in a tie for 51st at two-over with 18 holes left to play.
