Police said five individuals were shot near Franklin Park Zoo in Boston Sunday night.

Authorities said they received a call in the evening at about 8:45 p.m. All the victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. There have been no arrests made as the investigation is ongoing, Boston law enforcement officials said. There have been other shootings in the area this year.

In March, police said Avery Lewis attempted to gun a police officer down near the zoo. The law enforcement official survived the attack thanks to his bullet-proof vest.

Around 9:30 p.m., the officer was responding to a domestic complaint at a home on Esmond Street, just off Blue Hill Avenue, close to the Franklin Park Zoo, when he was shot once in the chest.

According to the prosecutor, Lewis was armed with a gun when the officer tried to take him into custody. The gun went off, but the bullet was stopped by the officer's bulletproof vest. Lewis, 31, of Dorchester, was arrested and the gun was recovered, according to police. The prosecutor said the gun had 14 live rounds in it.

Approximately two years into his work, the officer was sent to Boston Medical Center to receive treatment for what the police described as "non-life-threatening injuries." He discharge from the hospital soon after.

Lewis was charged with ten crimes at the Dorchester District Court, including armed assault with the intent to murder, assault and battery on a police officer, illegal firearm possession, illegal ammunition possession, illegal possession of a large capacity feeding device, assault and battery with a firearm, firing a weapon within 500 feet of a building, illegal firearm possession in the commission of a felony, cocaine trafficking, and resisting arrest.

Lewis has a long criminal history, according to court records. In 2009, he was accused of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon as well as armed robbery. In 2017, he was accused of drug distribution and of violating drug laws close to a park or school.

In May, Boston police received a call stating shots had been fired in the afternoon, leaving one individual with non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim of that shooting was found injured at around 3 p.m. near the intersection of Erie and Seaver streets. Cops investigated a car at the intersection that had bullet holes on the passenger side of the door. The driver seat window was completely shattered.
