A Michigan man couldn't believe his luck when he missed out on a $610,000 lottery jackpot by just one digit - but won a bigger prize the very next day.

The 53-year-old man from Malcolm County had originally purchased a ticket for the Michigan lottery on July 26 and was left disappointed when he discovered he missed the jackpot by one number . Feeling the frustration of the moment he admitted uttering “I was so close” when he realized what had happened.

Not feeling too put off by the near miss he decided to purchase another ticket the very next day, this time opting to buy an online ticket for the Fantasy 5 drawing on July 27. Unbelievably, his second gamble paid off when matched all five numbers and won an incredible $795,905 jackpot.

The prize was far greater than what he would have won on the previous day's ticket. Michigan Lottery officials confirmed his spectacular win, stating that the man had indeed purchased the winning ticket online on July 27, a jaw dropping 24 hours after his near miss.

Talking about his incredible run of luck with the Michigan Lottery, the man shared said he is a regular player of the lottery but that night when he missed the jackpot by one digit and only won 100 dollars forgot to buy his tickets from the store as usual due to his disappointment over the loss. However, he then remembered and bought two tickets online the next day.

He said: “I always buy Fantasy 5 tickets if the jackpot is over $250,000, I usually buy my tickets in-store, but the night of the drawing, I realized I’d forgotten to buy some.”

He said that after seeing the prize money pending on his account he thought he was being scammed and that reality only sunk in when he went to the lottery office to claim his prize. He said: ”When I logged in and saw $795,905 pending, my first thought was that it was a scam. What’s crazy is the night before, I matched four out of five numbers on my Fantasy 5 ticket and thought: ‘I was so close!'”
