Wrexham dealt blow in Tottenham transfer chase after Dominic Solanke move

Wrexham's attempt to add more firepower to its front line has taken a blow after Tottenham changed its mind on Will Lankshear’s availability.

The Red Dragons’ League One campaign has begun promisingly with a 3-2 win over Wycombe Wanderers, followed by a goalless draw away against promotion hopefuls Bolton on Sunday. Phil Parkinson’s players also scored twice in their Carabao Cup defeat against Sheffield United last Tuesday.

But it seems that Parkinson wants to add another striker to the team alongside Paul Mullin , Ollie Palmer and Jack Marriott. Wrexham was reported to be interested in signing Tottenham striker Lankshear on loan for the coming season.

According to GiveMeSport , Lankshear signed a new five-year deal at Tottenham earlier in the summer and was expected to be loaned out, with Championship sides Sunderland and Hull City making inquiries about his availability alongside the Red Dragons.

However, there was a delay over the deal with Lankshear heading on pre-season with Spurs, allowing Ange Postecoglou to get a closer look at the teenager. And it now appears that the striker has convinced his manager to remain part of the first-team squad this year. According to PA Sport, Lankshear will stay at Spurs as part of Postecoglou’s first-team squad.

PA Sport reports that he leapfrogged fellow young Lilywhites strikers Dane Scarlett, who joined Championship side Oxford United on loan, and Alejo Veliz in the pecking order after thriving in pre-season. Lankshear is expected to give cover to new £65million signing Dominic Solanke, who arrived from Bournemouth after scoring 19 Premier League goals last season. Although, it’s added that Lankshear’s position may change come deadline day.

Wrexham is yet to add a new striker to its squad so far in the transfer window. The Wales club will likely be pursuing other targets up front with Lankshear currently appearing to be off the market and current striker options limited by Mullin’s injury absence.

Tottenham start its Premier League campaign on Monday against newly-promoted Leicester with Solanke potentially in line to make his debut. Fellow striker Richarlison missed the final few games of last season and the Copa America due to injury but he may recover to make the bench.

Spurs can still deploy Son Heung-min and Timo Werner as the central figure in attack as they have done previously, while Dejan Kulusevski started as a striker in pre-season but is unlikely to be given that role in the league. Lankshear is yet to make his senior debut for Spurs but could be among the substitutes for the opening game.
