Two decades after their initial split, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have announced their divorce . Missing a crucial deadline could result in a financial hit for the couple, in addition to the emotional toll.

Fans were overjoyed when the duo, who first ended their engagement in 2004, rekindled their romance in 2021, sparking a wave of early 2000s nostalgia. The subsequent year saw them exchange vows in Las Vegas, followed by a jubilant celebration at Affleck's Georgia residence, making it feel like a classic romantic comedy unfolding in real life.

However, recent signs suggested that not everything was rosy in the Bennifer household - most notably when Lopez was seen without her green diamond ring just days after they celebrated the 4th of July separately.

Lopez, now 55, has filed for divorce, with the date listed as August 20, 2024 - their second wedding anniversary. This poignant date likely added to the heartache, and more pain could be on the horizon if the former pair fail to disclose their respective financial details in time.

Documents filed by Lopez do not specify whether a prenuptial agreement exists, but sources suggest the couple did not sign one before their Little White Chapel wedding. Without a prenup, any income earned by Bennifer would be considered community property.

Since tying the knot with Affleck, 52, Lopez has featured in films like Shotgun Wedding, The Mother, This Is Me... Now and Atlas. Meanwhile, her fourth husband starred in Air and Hypnotic, and produced The Instigators.

According to court documents, Lopez has waived spousal support and requested the judge to deny Affleck the same.

Documents filed in LA's Superior Court reveal that the former Gigli co-stars are required to share financial information within a specific time frame. This includes their current incomes and expenses, as well as any properties and debts they may have.

Failure to comply could result in hefty penalties, according to the BBC .

The document reportedly mandates both parties to disclose any financial changes 'until there is a final agreement about all financial issues in [their] case'. The court has given Lopez 60 days to file a financial disclosure, while Affleck has an additional 60 days after his ex's information is submitted.

Should either of the ex-spouses fail to report or update their financial information, they could face court-imposed sanctions, potentially leading to substantial fines. DivorceNet advises that any information regarding a couple's finances should be disclosed early in the divorce process for the 'marital estate' to be divided.

Melissa Heinig, an attorney at Cooley Law School, cautions: "Unless divorcing spouses agree on how to divide everything, a judge will evaluate and divide the marital estate using the state's property division laws. Some states divide the estate 'equally' (community property states), while others use an 'equitable distribution' method, which means a fair (but not necessarily equal) division."

Meanwhile, a source close to the situation has disclosed that Lopez feels let down by Affleck's lack of effort to salvage their union and is now prepared to 'move on'. The insider shared with People: "She's very disappointed and sad, but Ben hasn't given her any signs that he wants to continue their marriage."
