Madonna 's fans are up in arms after she labeled her followers as "fat" and "unattractive social outcasts."

The 66-year-old pop icon is known for her candidness and never shying away from speaking her mind. In the past, Madonna has openly discussed being ex-communicated by The Vatican following accusations of blasphemy and profanity due to her on-stage performances which included a self-"crucifixion".

However, a 1991 interview that recently resurfaced on social media has left fans utterly shocked by Madonna's remarks, which some have labeled as "fatphobic". During the interview, Madonna expressed her joy of living in Los Angeles where she could enjoy privacy while dining out with friends or visiting a bar.

Yet, she continued to say that while she appreciates people approaching her to tell her she's "great", she detests it when "obsessive fanatics" approach her. Speaking to The Washington Post, she said: "It's the obsessive fanatics whose attention seems very hostile, it's beyond admiration, it's very creepy."

Madonna further added: "It's always fat people too. They are the most unattractive social outcasts, like really overweight girls or guys with lots of acne that follow me around and pester me. It's frightening because not only are they bothering me, but they're horrible to look at too."

The internet went ablaze with the recently circulated interview, now having racked up over 500,000 views on what was once Twitter, putting Madonna back under the spotlight without an official response from her. But fans are fiercely taking sides. One shocked fan admitted, "I audibly gasped." Another wrote in disbelief, "Truly one of the most awful popstars oh wow." In the conversation, another added their two cents, exclaiming, "That last part is so embarrassing for her."

While one more critic didn't hold back, declaring, "Madonna is really committed to the bit of being fatphobic," And yet another comment surfaced, reflecting broader discontent: "If you're mad about what Chappell Roan said on TikTok, you're gonna hate what Madonna said in The Washington Post 30+ years ago."

Chappell Roan shook up social media as well, openly stating on TikTok that she thinks it's "weird" how people feel entitled to approach her "just because you see them online or because you listen to the art they make," bluntly adding, "I don't give a f---," when referring to fans feeling "entitled" to personal interactions like photos and hugs.

The fresh wave of controversy hitting Madonna follows the recent furor sparked by her decision to rent out Pompeii for her birthday bash at what many consider an "absurd" fee. According to reports, she splurged on the ancient Teatro Grande amphitheater for her lavish celebration. While the event isn't officially confirmed by the site, Italian daily La Repubblica cited the mayor of Pompeii stating, "We are ready to welcome the singer".

However, the news has sparked outrage among some Italians who are unhappy with the pop icon's choice of venue and her alleged payment of just $40,000 for the booking. Michele Campisi, general secretary of the Italia Nostra heritage association, was quoted by The Times as saying: "€30,000 is absurd. It's like giving Pompeii away."

He also questioned why Madonna chose to celebrate her birthday in Pompeii instead of a "beautiful beach instead."

Additionally, Rosanna Carrieri, president of cultural presence group Mi Riconosci, argued that Italian heritage should not be used as a 'scenic background' for "exclusive events".
