Real reason Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck without a lawyer

Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck after two years of marriage without an attorney present.

JLo submitted paperwork to the Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday and filed pro per, meaning she filed by herself without an attorney. Joe and Cheryl Dillion, divorce mediators and relationship experts at Equitable Mediation, told The Mirror that an attorney isn’t needed to file for divorce.

“What most people don't know is that you don't need a lawyer to get a divorce in the United States,” they revealed. “Certainly some people choose to involve them, but there are other non-attorney options as well.”

The relationship experts said Jennifer may not have involved a lawyer was because there was "nothing to argue over".

“There may not be a lot to argue about, and therefore Jennifer may not have felt the need for further legal representation,” they said. If “issues” arise in the future, then that’s when a mediator could be brought in.

The award-winning songstress didn't reveal in her documents if there was a prenuptial agreement between her and the Daredevil star, but TMZ insiders said Jennifer and Ben didn't have a prenup . This might pose as a problem since any profits or earnings that famous folk have made during their two years of marriage are now community property.

“If there are any issues that do need to be resolved, they could do so with the help of a neutral third-party mediator,” Joe and Cheryl told us. “Certainly, after the mediator helps them negotiate an agreement, they could each have their respective counsel review it. Perhaps Jennifer simply didn't feel the need to involve attorneys. That’s her decision to make."

Jennifer and Ben rekindled her romance with Ben in 2021, and the recoupled pair married a year later in an intimate Las Vegas Wedding in July 2022. In August 2022, Jen and Ben had a second wedding ceremony in Georgia - the Maid in Manhattan star filed for divorce on their second wedding anniversary.

Jennifer and Ben’s love story began over 20 years ago when the two first began dating in 2002, getting engaged the same year, and then splitting for the first time in 2004.
