A man in his 50s was shot to death by an El Paso Independent School District police officer on Thursday, it was reported, as classes were canceled amid the violent event .

The incident unfolded along the perimeter of Franklin High School at approximately 6 a.m. on Thursday. EPSID officers reportedly encountered the individual and shot him dead, though the details of the incident were hazy.

EPSID Police Department Chief Manuel Chavira told reporters during a news conference that the shooting was an isolated incident and that no students were or are in danger. Nevertheless, classes were canceled pending an ongoing investigation.

There had only been cross-country athletes at the school at the time of the incident, the El Paso Times reported, but none were near the area of the shooting, Chavira confirmed to the publication.

The students present at the school were immediately placed in lockdown and were safe the entire time, it was reported. Classes are expected to resume on Friday at the high school, which is located in West El Paso.

It was only the high school that suffered canceled classes, too, as that's where the incident occurred. District officials told the El Paso Times that classes were scheduled to take place as usual for the rest of the day on Thursday at all the district's other campuses.

A body in a white sheet was reportedly spotted outside the school just before classes were slated to begin on Thursday morning, the publication reported, and red crime scene tape could be seen blocking off the gravel outside the school, which is located at 900 N. Resler Dr., local TV station KFOX reported, showing images of the scene.

Amanda Bowser, the school's principal, released a statement on Franklin High School's website about the shooting, calling it an "overnight incident."

She wrote, "Due to an overnight incident that occurred at Franklin High School, all classes have been canceled for today. Law enforcement is investigating, please stay clear of the area. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and we are working closely with authorities to address the situation. Thank you for your understanding."

According to KFOX, the El Paso Police Department is assisting the EPSID police with the investigation. EPSID also released a statement about the early morning incident.

"The El Paso Independent School District PD was involved in a shooting at Franklin High School while investigating an early morning incident. This incident did not involve any students, and there is no danger to the community, students, or staff," the district wrote, according to KFOX. "One person died as a result of this incident. Outside agencies are assisting El Paso ISD with the investigation. Further communication will be provided as more information becomes available."
