Shoppers fume over Target's 'ungodly' self-checkout wait times amid calls for boycott

Shoppers are blaming Target's new self-checkout policy for the lengthy lineups. Target tested the 10-item or less self-checkout limit in a pilot program last fall.

Self-checkout proved to be twice as quick for the retailer, who started implementing the move across all of its locations in March. Even after all this time, clients are still experiencing problems with the policy. Although the lanes are designated as "express," customers report that they are anything but swift.

"Hey Target, if self-checkout is 10 items or less, open up more than one register," wrote Josh Morton on X , after waiting for an hour. "I'm done with this business."

Target expressed regret and requested that he send him a message to address the problem. When the business first announced the strategy, it promised to offer employee-staffed, more conventional lanes for consumers with larger loads. Target's customers have pleaded with it to fulfill this promise.

"If Target is going to 'force' people to use human checkout — rather than self-checkout — they need to open more than two lanes," shopper Gina Giordano wrote in a Facebook post. Another consumer claimed that the policy made a five-minute shopping excursion take 25 minutes instead of the normal five. When Target announced last month that it would no longer accept checks, it caused controversy.

The Federal Reserve estimates that in 2023, checks were utilized in just 3% of transactions. On July 15, Target ceased to accept checks due to "extremely low volumes". Despite taking "several measures" to alert visitors ahead of time, some consumers were still having problems, according to the company.

"Target, hey, you changed your policy so that we can’t pay off your card with a check two weeks ago and never sent an email about it," the shopper wrote on X. "Great job. Good thing I had some cash with me, but I’m going to get charged interest because of this? That’s some BS."

The store issued an apology and stated that as of June 16, it has begun informing consumers about the change. Some clients claimed that Target will eventually suffer from the decision.

"Makes me sad for so many elderly shoppers and organizations, clubs, etc. who shop there. I love Target, but I think this move will ultimately hurt them," commented a shopper on a Facebook post. A checkout mistake caused a Target customer's price to increase by 70%, shocking them.

In a busy city, the one and only Target is closing, leaving patrons without anywhere to shop.
