A family from Hollister, California , is warning parents to exercise caution after their 2-year-old daughter ended up in the emergency room due to alcohol being accidentally given to her at a Salinas restaurant .

The family were enjoying a big meal at Fujiyama Japanese Restaurant, a local Salinas restaurant, when their 2-year-old daughter was given alcohol by accident , which led to an overnight stay at the emergency room . The parents had ordered apple juice for their daughter, but they were unaware that the cup of juice she was sipping contained homemade cooking wine until their daughter began to exhibit signs of intoxication.

It was then presented inside a standard juice cup that had a lid. Nothing seemed out of place until later, when the toddler's behavior became concerning. As soon as the parents smelled the beverage, they realized it was wine. "She was swaying, she was falling over, she was leaning on walls, she couldn't hold her head up, she was slurring her words," mom Noemi Valencia said.

The parents stayed overnight in the emergency room in Salinas Valley. They reported that their daughter's system had an alcohol content of 0.12% after a blood test. They're hoping that the restaurant has learned from its error.

According to the restaurant manager who spoke with KSBW 8, it was a mistake. Their server realized that the wine was being kept inside a big container marked "apple juice"." Salinas police did confirm that they are investigating the incident and that a police report was made on August 17, 2024.

"Take proper precautions and how you store things or label things properly so that this doesn't happen to anybody else," Valencia said. Since then, the young child has sobered up and healed completely. Her parents ask other adults to taste what their children were offered and express gratitude that things weren't worse.

"Parents: taste what's served to your kids," they said. The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control said: "The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is aware of the reports and is working with local authorities to investigate."

There are different levels of alcohol that are toxic to kids. Different drinks have varying alcohol contents. The age and weight of a child also matter. The bloodstream absorbs alcohol from the stomach rapidly. In summary, children should only consume little amounts of alcohol—much less than what adults can handle, according to Poison.org

Poisoning can result from consuming too much alcohol relative to a child's body weight.
