A Florida man was convicted of murder after stabbing his girlfriend to death in front of her toddler , then leaving the young child alone with his mother's body in a gruesome series of events .

Orestes Figueredo-Ortega was found guilty after a days-long trial in late July into August nearly four years after the vicious crime occurred. According to State Attorney Ed Brodsky, who detailed the case in a release posted to the State Attorney’s Office 12th Judicial Circuit Facebook page, Figueredo-Ortega was dating Delmy Teyul Ba — but amid domestic abuse allegations, he had been given a no-contact order.

According to the press release, he was charged with domestic battery after he attempted to strangle her on a previous date. He was charged with domestic battery by strangulation and was on pretrial release when the murder occurred. He was also on felony probation for charges out of Miami-Dade County.

On Sept. 17, 2020, Figueredo-Ortega didn't show up to work like he was supposed to — instead, he went to Delmy's home in violation of the no-contact order to "see what Ms. Teyul was doing," the release stated.

"A verbal, argument turned physical, and Mr. Figueredo-Ortega strangled Ms. Teyul. She was able to break free from the strangulation. Mr. Figueredo-Ortega then grabbed a knife and stabbed Ms. Teyul three times," the release states. "The fatal stab went through her heart and into her left lung."

The release stated that the toddler watched the entire ordeal. After the incident, Figueredo-Ortega fled the scene and left the toddler alone with his mother's body. Figueredo-Ortega was apprehended later that day after driving to Miami.

The court found Figueredo-Ortega guilty of second-degree murder with a weapon. Sentencing for the crime was slated to be scheduled at a later date. Figueredo-Ortega faces life in prison at most.

The murder reportedly occurred at the Sunset Mobile Home Park in Bradenton on the Gulf of Mexico in Florida's south, just south of Tampa. The Manatee County Sheriff's Office investigated the case, responding to reports of the stabbing at 12:46 p.m. that fateful day.

Delmy was stabbed five times in total — which included wounds to her chest, abdomen and thigh. She also had a defensive wound on her left forearm and back.

A murder weapon wasn't found when the sheriff's deputies arrived. The woman who called 911 was reportedly called by Figueredo-Ortega and asked to call 911 for him, so she raced to the home and found Delmy, 21, dead on the floor 10 minutes later.

The woman told police that Figueredo-Ortega had initially claimed Delmy stabbed herself but he then told her that Delmy had a knife and he "had to stab her", according to a sworn statement from a detective with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Security footage at the mobile home park showed Figueredo-Ortega's Chevrolet Cruze entering the area at 11:09 a.m. and leaving 10 minutes later. The vehicle was tracked to Miami after the authorities found a picture of it from a toll booth camera heading in the direction of Miami at 1:19 p.m.

Lead prosecutor Assistant State Attorney Charlie Lawrence said, according to the release, "We are pleased with the jury's verdict holding the defendant responsible for his brutal and fatal attack on this victim. Domestic violence is a prevalent issue in our community, and this case is a heart-breaking example of the problem. Law Enforcement's quick response and investigative techniques led to the defendant's timely apprehension. Delmy Teyul and her family have obtained justice for her senseless death."
