Grand Theft Auto aficionados have been hit with the bombshell that a highly-anticipated GTA VR project has been scrapped, but experts say fans could actually benefit from this unwelcome surprise in the long run . Flashback to 2021: Meta confirmed development of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas VR for their virtual reality headsets.

However, silence since then fueled rumors that the collaboration between Rockstar Games and Meta was hitting bumps . Confirming gamers' worst fears, Meta has now announced that GTA San Andreas VR is "on hold indefinitely"a polite way of saying, don't hold your breath for this game.

Meta released a statement to IGN, acknowledging the halt in production: " GTA: San Andreas is on hold indefinitely while we both focus on other projects. We look forward to working with our friends at Rockstar in the future."

While the shelving of GTA San Andreas VR is disappointing, there is a silver lining for those eagerly awaiting GTA 6.

Rockstar Games can now redirect its full attention to ensuring a seamless roll-out of Grand Theft Auto 6, reports the Express .

Targeting an autumn 2025 release, Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, remains confident about meeting the timeline.

Set in the fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Florida, Grand Theft Auto 6 promises to be another blockbuster in the iconic series.

Rockstar spills the beans: "Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet."

Eager fans got a bird's-eye view of some of the map locations in the latest teaser. The sneak peek includes spots inspired by the Florida Keys, alongside the beachfront and more.

GTA enthusiasts are on the edge of their seats, hoping for a closer look at these locales and some actual gameplay when the next GTA 6 trailer is speculated to land on October 4.
