Trey Lance branded 'game-changer' despite throwing five interceptions in dismal performance

Trey Lance's frustrating performance has been summed up by former quarterback Robert Griffin III after throwing five interceptions while making numerous highlight plays.

Lance had been given a huge opportunity by the Dallas Cowboys , being given the whole game in the hopes of impressing while potentially being a long-term successor to Dak Prescott should he leave the team next season.

And while Lance showed off his capabilities with 323 receiving yards and 90 rushing yards while being able to move the ball, he threw a whopping five interceptions - all being poor decisions by the quarterback while leaving Cowboy fans delated.

For all of Lance's abilities, he has continued to let himself down with his flaws through his four preseason while being given limited opportunities to start - despite being the third overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 before he was traded to Dallas. And while maybe may be willing to write Lance off, Griffin III is not willing to do so just yet.

The former Washington quarterback known as RG3 tweeted: "This is why you don’t give up on Trey Lance. His ability to be a game changer is CLEARLY THERE. He made these defenders with angles look like they were running in place."

RG3 had been referring to Lance's 46-yard quarterback option play where he had read the defense before taking off while making defensive backs miss for a touchdown - something few players are capable of at the position.

Lance now looks set to be Dallas' third-choice quarterback behind Prescott and Cooper Rush after his struggles, with the former set to the start and Rush impressing whenever given the opportunity to start in recent years.

After being selected in the third overall pick in 2021, Lance lost his starting place in his first full season of starting after Brock Purdy impressed - never looking back and seeing Lance traded for just a sixth-round pick.

Lance played just 16 games in college football, while having very limited reps in the NFL with the Cowboys looking to give him as much opportunities to play through the preseason. However, they could now risk losing him if they choose to carry three quarterbacks this year, potentially waiving him in the hopes of adding him to the practice squad.
