A defenseless puppy had to be put down after it was thrown down a garbage chute in a New York high rise apartment, leaving it with serious injuries.

The dog was found at the Gov. Alfred E Smith Houses, a public housing complex under the Brooklyn Bridge, according to NYPD officials . A worker known as Caretaker Jay was cleaning the compactor when he heard whimpering .

He then saved the canine, which had sustained four broken legs, from the garbage and handed it over to the ASPCA for medical attention. However the damage proved too serious and the dog was euthanised.

"Sadly, due to the severe medical injuries resulting in extreme suffering, this dog, an alleged victim of cruelty, was humanly euthanized to end existing and ongoing pain," Alyssa Flek, a representative for the animal welfare organisation said.

It remains unclear how long the pooch was trapped in the compactor before being saved. The gruesome discovery and subsequent rescue deeply affected Caretaker Jay. "[He] had to go home for the day," an employee, who chose to remain anonymous, shared.

Police say that the poor animal's entangled fur evidenced a history of neglect prior to being thrown down the chute. It is believed that the dog was a stranger to the building, with nobody supposedly knowing who the dog belonged to.

Now, a poignant photo of the neglected dog, looking almost lifeless after being rescued, is displayed in the lobby of the NYCHA building, urging anyone with information to contact the authorities. The distressing photograph shows the dog lying on its side, with its once white fur matted and discolored across its face and injured legs due to the severe mistreatment it endured.

Neighbours have shared their shock at the cruel incident while trying to work out who could commit such a cruel act. As of now, there have been no arrests, and the investigation continues.

"That's bad, man. That's animal cruelty. I'm not with that," local resident Jose Reynoso told The Post. "That's like doing it to a human. Who would do that? That would be someone pure evil."

"Obviously that person was not in their right mind. That's horrible," stated Michelle B. , another community member. "That's terrible. Who would do that? That's a breathing animal. Who would do that? Wow," expressed Carmen Lesbier, aged 65. If they do it to an animal, they'll do it to a human. That's disgusting! " exclaimed Maria, another resident who declined to provide her surname.
