PETA accuses Lily Allen of two key failures as fallout over puppy rehoming backlash rages on

Lily Allen found herself at the center of backlash after she sent her puppy Mary back to an animal shelter for chewing up her passport.

The Smile singer’s rehoming move caught so much flak from animal-loving PETA members sent her a letter in addition to a mechanical toy dog. PETA’s Elisa Allen wrote: “It really is the only animal you should bring into your home. Dogs should never be treated as accessories to be discarded when they become inconvenient.

Also, the official PETA X, formerly Twitter, account took another shot at Lily , scolding her on the social media platform. “As someone high profile with a platform, what you say matters. Laughing about this ‘f- - -king’ dog being sent back sends a dangerous message,” the post read. “Every move is traumatic to a homeless dog who then can never expect this home is forever.”

Lily reshared PETA’s tweet with the reply, “Nineteen Eighty Paws,” seemingly referencing George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four amid the scandal. The Hard Out Here songstress revealed on an episode of her Miss Me? podcast on Monday specifically why she gave her pup Mary up.

She said she "tried very hard" but "it just didn't work out," saying that Mary eating some of her family's passports had been "the straw that broke the camel's back.” While Lily’s decision might have been the best choice for her, it’s not the best move in the eyes of PETA, for two major reasons.

A rep for the animal organization told The Mirror US that Lily “failing” to be more patient with the pooch could greatly impact the animal.

“We are concerned that Lily hasn’t figured out yet that failing to have patience, failing to recognize that she has contributed at the very least to more insecurity in a dog who thought they had a family and a home, is not helpful to anyone, and we wish she would admit she did wrong by Mary which would help other people understand too,” the PETA rep said.

The Mirror US has also reached out to Lily to get her side but her team has yet to respond to our request for comment. However, Lily has been very forthcoming to PETA about their role in seemingly instigating all of the harsh criticism toward her. She accused PETA of having added "fuel to the fire,” and her claim sparked a tense exchange between them on X in recent days.

PETA recently wrote on X in one post: "YOU laughed when speaking about abandoning Mary and ruined this poor dog's life. She thought she had a loving forever home before you tossed her out, calling her 'that f---king dog' who 'ruined my life.' Shame on you. You don't deserve even the toy dog we sent you."

In response, Lily wrote: “People laugh when they talk about painful things all the time, it's quite normal. I've clarified that we didn't abandon her and that she was rehomed with people we knew almost immediately."

She continued: "Why are you perpetuating lies? What kind of animal welfare charity tries to shame someone for wanting to improve the welfare of an animal.”
