Mariah Carey was estranged from her sister Alison before her death.

The singer reportedly was not in contact with her sister because of Alison's alleged drug addiction driving them apart. Mariah has spoken about their tumultuous relationship in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. She stated at the time that it would be "emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact" with her or their brother Morgan.

Throughout her memoir, the 55-year-old detailed how her sister was “deeply wounded” but also “the most brilliant and broken person I have ever known.” She spoke on how Alison saw "things a child should never see" before Mariah was born which affected her elder sister, who was eight years older, greatly. Mariah added the mother-of-two experienced things that "damaged and derailed her girlhood."

Their parents, Patricia and Alfred Roy Carey, divorced in 1973 when Mariah was only three so Alison "was fully aware when the family unit unraveled and our parents turned on each other; she absorbed the full pain of a family coming undone." Mariah also shared that Alison allegedly struggled with drug abuse and gave Mariah drugs when she was young.

“My sister drugged me with Valium, offered me a pinky nail full of cocaine, inflicted me with third-degree burns, and tried to sell me out to a pimp,” Mariah wrote.

Alison denied those allegations and filed a lawsuit against the Vision of Love artist and asked for $1.25million in February 2021, claiming in her autobiography Mariah inflicted "immense emotional distress" and caused her "public humiliation."

"Already struggling with the unspeakable trauma of her childhood and having her own children abandon her, she has become severely depressed and uncharacteristically tearful since the publication of defendant's book and now struggles, after a long time clean, with alcohol abuse," the lawsuit read.

Sources told TMZ that Mariah never contacted Alison before her passing but spent the week with her mother Patricia who was dying. The sources also claimed that over the years Mariah tried supporting Alison through her drug addiction both emotionally as well as financially but it didn't work. Mariah allegedly ultimately decided on tough love with a view to cut her sister off and constructed boundaries between the two as to not be an enabler, according to the outlet's sources.

On Monday, August 26, Mariah confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE that her mother and sister passed away over the weekend on the same day. She told the outlet: "My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day. I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."

There has been no further details of the cause of either Alison and Patricia's death.
