The social media network X, formerly known as Twitter was down with millions of users unable to access the site, on Tuesday.

According to DownDetector, a website that tracks when sites crash, users of X began reporting problems with the site just after 11pm ET.

A graph on the site showed a peak of more than 30,000 reported outages. It is not yet know what caused the outage, but it left millions of users flooding other social channels to discuss what has gone wrong.

On the Meta-owned rival to X, Threads, hundreds of people were asking if it was down, while others shared screengrabs of the site not working.

One said: "Twitter down, Everyone panic", while a second added: "Finally a good place to look for an answer to the question "is Twitter down?"."

The outage began clearing after around 30mins, but still left some users unable to access their feeds properly.

The site, now owned by Elon Musk, has come under fire from many accusing it of allowing hate speech while others claim it is protecting freedom of speech,.

In the UK some users were recently arrested by police following chilling riots with claims they had stirred up trouble and posted untruths that caused violence to spiral.
