Scottie Scheffler ’s cap he wore on the day of his arrest before the PGA Championships has sold for a staggering amount at auction.

Golf’s No. 1 world ranked player was detained on his way to Valhalla to make his tee time at the PGA Championships on May 17. However, fans soon saw pictures of Scheffler in handcuffs and a mugshot which had gone viral on social media.

A fatal collision involving a pedestrian had happened outside the club at 5:09am and heavy traffic had formed due to the incident. It’s said that Scheffler was caught in a misunderstanding which led to him being dragged out of his car by an officer.

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, a class-C felony, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. But months on, Scheffler’s cap he wore on the day went under the hammer over the weekend at a Kids Cancer Alliance charity auction.

The simple white Nike golf cap which was signed and sat on Scheffler’s head that day sold for an incredible $2,375 – it was also sold alongside three Scheffler-signed golf balls. The listing was captioned: “A unique piece of sports history you won't find anywhere else!

“Olympic Gold Medalist Scottie Scheffler autographed hat, which he wore during the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla on May 17, 2024 (a day which is now infamous). Also includes a sleeve of three balls each signed by Scottie Scheffler for you to keep for yourself or share with friends. Winner will receive certification from Scheffler's manager of authenticity.”

Scheffler was able to make his 10:08am tee time – eventually finishing the tournament in T8 13-under - Xander Schauffele claimed his first career major 21-under. Upon his release, Scheffler gave his perspective on the incident and his subsequent arrest on his Instagram story. “This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier,” he wrote.

“And there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.”

Scheffler has gone on to win seven times in 2024, with six of those victories coming on the PGA Tour and his seventh was a gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games. The 28-year-old is vying to win the FedEx Cup for the first time at East Lake later this week. His ranking means he will start with a two-shot lead on 10-under par.
