Linkin Park's announcement countdown leaves fans on major cliffhanger as they say they were 'trolled'

Linkin Park fans were "trolled" by a countdown on the band's website.

Rumors of a potential reunion are in the air, but there's no confirmation yet about if that's what is in the works. After all, the band stepped back from music after the suicide of their lead singer, Chester Bennington, leaving them without a front man.

Despite the hole in the band, they dropped a countdown on their website with the timer's tick ending on Wednesday . Plus, the Danny Wimmer festival ‘Welcome to Rockville’ reposted the countdown, leaving people to question of Linkin Park might be reuniting for the event.

However, after the timer finished, it began counting back up, leaving fans confused with no answers. A fan laughed: "The linkin park countdown ending and then counting in reverse is actually the funniest thing they could’ve done. I hope there’s not even an announcement and that was it."

"Linkin Park just trolled the entire music scene..." wrote another. A third fan said: "Maybe the real Linkin Park was the friends we made along the way."

The band posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, a clip of the countdown. After the numbers flashed zero, it appeared to glitch out and go rogue before starting to count back up. "It's only a matter of time..." the band teased with a link to the website.

Co-founder of the band, Mike Shinoda, previously stressed that the band's website is the best source for the latest on Linkin Park happenings. He told Revolver : “Rumors always go around. People always ask what’s next for the band, and the best answer I can ever give anybody is when there’s something to tell you, we will tell you. When there’s an announcement to be made, it will be on LinkinPark.com. If you’re hearing it from somebody else, you can trust that information as much as you want to trust it.”

A reunion was first teased by Orgy’s Jay Gordon when he said Linkin Park was "still going for it" in an interview with Wired In The Empire. He said, “It’s going to be tough without Chester, but we’ll see. I hear they got a girl singer now. That’s what I heard.” However, he later released a statement retracting his comments about Linkin Park's potential plans. He said he "knows nothing about that."

A source confirmed the news to Billboard as they indicated that the band's booking agency was looking into potential gigs for the group. While the rumblings about a female singer are intensifying, news on who might have landed the role isn't yet confirmed. However, Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee ruled herself out of the mix, admitting they haven't asked her.

That being said, Amy would be open to the role. She told iHeartRadio Canada: “But that’s awesome. They should ask me about that. I don’t have a ton of free time, but I might do it part-time.”

Evanescence, though, appears to be busy themselves. After quite a few years of quiet, the band is set to take the stage again in October at When We Were Young Festival.
