As the real-life story of infamous murderers Lyle and Erik Menendez is being developed into a new Netflix series , we're taking a closer look at how the Puerto Rican band Menudo played a role in the chilling case .

The new series is a dramatization of the cold-blooded murder of José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez. In 1989, the parents were both shot and killed by their children Lyle and Erik after the brothers alleged that their violent act came after years of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse.

After confessing to their crime, Lyle and Erik were convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, and each received a life sentence without the possibility of parole. During the trial, prosecutors refuted the brothers’ claims of abuse claiming that the brothers had ulterior motives as they were accused of eyeing their parents’ millions and sharing a mutual hatred for their father.

And as the case comes back into the spotlight, we're taking a look at how the band Menudo also played a role in the criminal trial as one of the former band members also previously accused José of sexual abuse. Menudo is a '70s Puerto Rican boy band formed by producer Edgardo Díaz. Coined as the "Most Iconic Latino Pop Music Band" they have been ranked as one of the biggest boy bands of all time by several publications.

And according to legal documents, one of the boy band member Roy Rossello claimed he was drugged and raped by José when he was 13 or 14. The alleged incident occurred during a trip to New York 1983 or 1984, during which José was working as a high-level executive in the music industry.

During the trip, Rossello was reportedly asked to hop in a limo with José to bring them to his home in New Jersey. After arriving at José's residence, the filing alleges that José poured wine for the underage musician and then anally raped him.

Peacock’s famous docuseries “Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed” previously explored the allegations from Rossello, something that the Menendez brothers said they believe could've impacted their case three decades ago.

In an interview with NBC's Today show, Erik Menendez said: "I always hoped and believed that one day the truth about my dad would come out. But I never wished for it to come out like this: the result of trauma that another child has suffered."

His brother Lyle Menendez added: "We’d heard rumors that something might have happened with Menudo through the years. You know that that would have made a difference at trial.”
