PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has confessed that the ongoing merger discussions with LIV Golf are proving to be quite intricate, with no set deadline for a deal.

The PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, the financiers behind LIV Golf , inked a framework agreement on June 6, 2023, promising over $1 billion in investment. However, the deadline for this agreement lapsed on Dec. 31. Talks are still underway, and PGA Tour Commissioner Monahan offered an update on Wednesday during a press conference ahead of this week's Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.

"You look at where we are right now, we're in regular dialogue, we have the right people at the table with the right mindset," he stated. "I see that in all these conversations on both sides, that creates optimism about the future and our ability to come together."

"At the same time, these conversations are complex, they're going to take time," he admitted. "They have taken time and they will continue to take time. When I sit here today, I think the most important thing is our obligation to fans, players and partners is to focus on what we control, which we're doing as I outlined and continue to carry this momentum forward. I'm not going to negotiate details in public or disclose details or specifics, but all I can say is that conversations continue and they're productive."

After the deadline lapsed last year, the PGA dropped a bombshell by revealing it bagged a monstrous investment. It pocketed $1.5 billion upfront, with an eye-watering $3 billion in the reserve tank, all thanks to the hefty funds from Sports Group that established the grand-slamming division of PGA Tour Enterprises.

The VIP squad includes big-league names like Atlanta Falcons' Arthur Blank and Liverpool's tycoon John W. Henry, who also calls the shots at Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Penguins, The Boston Globe, and RFK Racing.

Joe Gorder, chairing the PGA Tour Enterprises, and Henry are calling the shots in the high-stakes play-off with the Saudis, bolstered by golfing legends Tiger Woods and Adam Scott, who have teamed up on the deal-making subcommittee. Monahan waxed positive about the negotiations, "I think when you get into productive conversations, that enhances the likelihood of positive outcomes, and that enhances the spirit of those very conversations. I think that's where things stand," he articulated.

With the Tour Championship on the horizon this Thursday, world ace Scottie Scheffler starts out in pole position, holding a two-step lead ahead of the game's silver medalist Xander Schauffele. Schefflera force to be reckoned with at 28, boasting six Tour victories this year, including a glistening win at the Mastersalso graced the top podium at the Paris Olympics.

Yet, a quirk in the tale remains since the 2019 shakeup at the Tour Championship; seems the frontrunner has never crossed the finish line victorious.
