Shake Shack closing multiple California locations as In-N-Out rival 'underperforming' - see full list

A national burger chain headquartered in New York City is set to close nine restaurants nationwide with more than half of the closures being in California.

Shake Shack, the east coast rival to west coast based In-N-Out-Burgers, known for their smash burgers , crinkle cut fries and milkshakes is set to close six California-based locations including the sole Oakland location. The stores will close by the end of the month with the company citing poor sales and underperformance as the primary reason for the closures.

Most of the California locations will close around Los Angeles, while three locations will close in Columbus, Ohio and Houston, Texas. Although the majority of restaurants are not set to close until Sept. 25, the Oakland location seems to have already been shut down with the San Francisco Business Times reporting that the location has been closed since July of this year.

The Oakland Shake Shack opened in December 2020 to much excitement from local burger lovers. The company's website does not reflect the closure as of right now, and phone calls to the restaurant go straight to an automated message.

Shake Shack has not given up on the Bay Area just yet as two new locations recently opened up in Walnut Creek and Santa Rosa, as well as in San Jose. 11 Shake Shack locations call the Bay Area home.

The Los Angeles locations set to close are in Downtown LA’s Bunker Hill neighborhood, the Westfield Topanga Mall location in Canoga Park as well as Silverlake, Koreatown and Culver City.

The Silverlake location, in particular, was a high visibility location for the brand, due to its proximity to the historic Black Cat gay bar as well as actor Donald Glover’s Jellyman boba shop.

But fans of the smash burger can rest easy knowing there are an additional 20 locations in the greater Los Angeles area that remain open including the states only drive thru that opened earlier this month. Shake Shack operates a total of 330 restaurants nationwide and over 400 across the world.
