Maine woman slams dead mother in harsh obituary writing 'Ding dong the witch is dead'

A Maine woman shared a harsh obituary for her deceased mother, calling her an abusive witch who did the world a favor by dying.

After Florence 'Flo' Harrelson, 65, died in February, her daughter Christina Novak, who is estranged from her, stated she didn't know of her mother's death until this month. "(Harrelson) died without family by her side due to burnt bridges and a wake of destruction left in her path," Novak wrote on the obituary. Because Harrelson "wanted those she terrorized to still be living in fear looking over their shoulders even in death," according to Novak, the delay was caused by her desire "that neither an obituary nor anyone including family know she died.

"So, this isn’t so much an obituary but more of a public service announcement ," Novak added. Although Novak penned a harsh obituary for her own mother, she told Bangor Daily News that she was pleased to get her last thoughts out of her system rather than upset when writing it.

"When I wrote it. I wasn’t mad, I wasn’t angry. I was actually sitting with pen and paper and giggling to myself," Novak said. In addition, Novak proudly posted the obituary on her Facebook page, adding the music "Ding dong, the witch is dead" to a picture of the text.

She allegedly said that her mother was a controlling and abusive person and that she was not the only family member who felt relieved when her mother died. "I don't acknowledge mentally challenged, lazy, dishonest people as grandchildren," Harrelson reportedly told her daughter in a prior text exchange that Novak posted to Facebook and that was purportedly sent by her mother.

Despite having a cancer diagnosis, Novak's mother, a former Marine and guard at the Maine State Prison, said that Harrelson died from heart failure.

An inmate who claimed that Harrelson and other guards tried to recruit another prisoner to attack him filed a lawsuit against her when she worked as a guard. The mother and daughter had not spoken for more than 10 years, and according to Novak, she didn't learn about Harrelson's passing until six months later.

She added that she would have preferred to know sooner and could have saved herself months of worrying that her mother may resurface in her life, which is why she chose to write the harsh obituary. When Novak first started writing her mother's traditional obituary, she said she found it difficult to include any kind words and instead focused on all of her mother's supposed transgressions.
