Jamie Carragher sets date for Erik ten Hag firing after Man Utd thrashed by Liverpool

Jamie Carragher doesn't see Erik ten Hag lasting the season in the wake of Manchester United's chastening loss against Liverpool.

It was heavily speculated that the Dutchman would lose his job last term after overseeing a disappointing Premier League campaign, but he was eventually handed a reprieve by United's top brass after winning the FA Cup.

Ten Hag hasn't enjoyed the best start to the new campaign, though, with United on three points from three games heading into the international break. And Carragher, fresh off watching United get thumped 3-0 by Liverpool , simply cannot see Ten Hag making it until the end of the season based on the team's performance on Sunday.

He told Sky Sports: "I don't think anything is going to change in terms of the football [at Man Utd].

"I have seen this before at Liverpool. Go back before Klopp came in when there was talk of Brendan Rodgers losing his job after one season. They weren't sure what to do, FSG [Liverpool's ownership], and they kept him and Rodgers changed his staff.

"You expect something different, but the manager is the main man. Rodgers was gone in October. Ten Hag said in his interview 'we will see where we are at the end of the season'. I would be surprised if he is still there at the end of the season."

Ten Hag, though, came out swinging after the match and insisted that his side will be challenging for trophies after he was asked if United's issues were familiar to the ones that plagued them last year.

He responded: "I don't think you are right. You can see the XG we didn't concede as many goals. I don't think we are in the same pattern. It was sometimes open and we took risks. But I don't want to talk about this after a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool. Well done Liverpool. We have to be humble and take it.

"There are many games to play and I know where we will be at the end of the season. We will go for trophies. That will stand."
