A father died while attempting to swim from the shore to his wife and kids on a boat during a Labor Day weekend outing at Lake Lanier in Georgia .

Hasani Kamau Widemond's body was discovered under 25 feet of water after he drowned on Saturday, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said.

Widemond, 46, from Vinings in Atlanta , was attempting to swim from the shore to his family's boat when he died. Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers said his wife and children watched him die.

Forsyth County police and fire crews were called to Bethel Park at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Wardens and other first responders raced out onto the lake with boat-mounted sonar equipment before divers arrived.

The boat crew and divers scoured the area where Widemond disappeared and discovered his body over two dozen feet below the surface, Atlanta News Now reported.

Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers said it was "very tragic and sad." He urged people swimming in the lake to wear life preservers. He said, "Swim with friends so you have someone there to help you."

Widemond was the third person to die in recent months in the lake. A 76-year-old man drowned in Lake Lanier in June after having last been seen on his dock. He was found dead in 13 feet of water.

A 73-year-old man drowned in May after his boat seat came loose, causing him to take a tumble into the lake.
