An asteroid the size of two football fields will narrowly miss Earth later this month. The large planetoid dubbed "2024 ON" will pass just 620,000 miles from Earth on September 15.

It is considered a "close call" in cosmic terms, Business Today reported. The 720-foot-wide asteroid is comparable to two football fields, making it one of the larger objects to pass near Earth this year.

It will be visible from Earth through telescope or binoculars to those on the northern hemisphere. The asteroid is being closely monitored by NASA, who track any near-earth objects that pose a danger to the planet.

The space agency's deflection mission Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is testing technology that can alter an asteroid's course. Flyby objects are monitored by NASA because they are larger than 150 meters and pass within 4.6 million miles of earth.

Asteroids like 2024 ON usually vary in makeup- ranging from rocky material to metals like nickel and iron, and were formed over 4.6 billion years ago. The asteroid's close approach comes just after a meteor was spotted shooting over the iconic Statue of Liberty in New York City back in July.

The meteor shot pass midtown Manhattan early in the morning, leading to confusion from witnesses. The meteor was classified as a fireball, which are “exceptionally bright meteors that are spectacular enough to be seen over a very wide area”, according to NASA . Daylight fireballs are considered very rare.

Nasa said the meteor, which was traveling at a whopping 34,000mph “descended at a steep angle of just 18 degrees from vertical, passing over the Statue of Liberty before disintegrating 29 miles above midtown Manhattan."
