Joey Chestnut set a new world record at a hot dog eating contest with a gut-busting performance to defeat his rival competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi

After being banned from the Nathans hot dog eating contest , Chestnut beat his own world record in Monday’s Unfinished Beef Labor Day showdown, streamed live on Netflix, Chestnut scarfed down 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Host Rob Riggle said that the production had prepared 300 hot dogs for the competition which was held at the HyperX Arena in Las Vegas. The competition followed the same format as the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating contest held in Coney Island, New York.

Contestants were not permitted to dunk or pour water on their hot dogs, or separate them from the buns. There were also penalties against any crumbs left behind or regurgitation of hot dogs. Chestnut beat his own world record of 76 hot dogs by seven, while Kobayashi was only able to get down 67 hot dogs.

“I’ve been trying to hit 80 hot dogs for years. Without Kobayashi, I was never able to do it. He drives me. We weren’t always nice to each other, but I love what he can do. We push each other to be our best,” Chestnut said on stage after the win.

“I feel like I did everything I could,” Kobayashi responded via an interpreter. The Japan native had previously announced his retirement from competitive eating earlier this year, and in doing so also revealed that he can no longer feel hunger.

Before Chestnut burst onto the scene in 2007, Kobayashi held the Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest championship from 2001-2006. Chestnut would go onto win 16 titles in 17 years before being banned from this year's most recent competition, due to a brand deal he made with Impossible Food. Patrick Bertoletti claimed the “Mustard Belt” at Coney Island in this year's competition.

In July, Chestnut followed through with a challenge set by Buffalo Wild Wings and ate 200 boneless chicken wings in under 38 minutes to the delight of fans .

The restaurant franchise agreed to extend its 'All You Can Eat' promotion if Chestnut could complete the challenge, and has now pushed back the expiry date. Chestnut has been giving back to his loyal fans following his snub from the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4.

His latest act was allowing Buffalo Wild Wings diners to continue enjoying the $19.99 offer, which includes unlimited boneless wings and fries on Mondays and Wednesdays. It all started on July 7, when the official Buffalo Wild Wings X account posted: "Hey @joeyjaws if you eat 200 boneless wings tomorrow at all you can eat, I'll extend it to 8/14."

Chestnut accepted the challenge and posted a picture from his local franchise, holding up a sign saying "200" next to an empty stack of plates. "Man of the people. All-you-can-eat boneless extended to 8/14," the restaurant replied on X.
