Tyreek Hill detained by police at Hard Rock stadium just hours before Miami Dolphins NFL opener

Tyreek Hill was detained by police officers as he attempted to enter Hard Rock Stadium for the Miami Dolphins' Week 1 clash with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Videos have emerged on social media of Hill being apprehended by officers, and ESPN's Jeff Darlington reports the wideout has been cited for reckless driving. It is claimed a "verbal spat" with officers escalated tensions.

However, the wide receiver's agent Drew Rosenhaus insists the All-Pro will suit up and play for the Dolphins today. The game is due to kick off at 1 p.m. ET, and Rosenhaus said: "I just left Tyreek and he is getting ready to play today.”

  • Rosenhaus added the incident was "mind-boggling" and "completely unnecessary". He continued: "I’m very distraught about it. We’re going to have to look into it.”

The Dolphins issued a statement confirming the 30-year-old has been released by officers and will be available for Sunday's game. A spokesman said: "This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police.

"He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today’s game."

Director Stephanie V. Daniels of the Miami-Dade Police Department released a statement on X, it read: "We are aware of the recent detainment of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by Miami-Dade Police Department officers. I have requested an immediate review of all the details surrounding the incident, and we are also reviewing available body camera footage. We will provide updates as futher information becomes available."

Footage of the incident appears to show Hill – who had been driving a black sports car – being held on the ground and put in handcuffs for around five minutes. Veteran defensive tackle Calais Campbell was also on the scene and spoke to officers to de-escalate the situation, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Hill, who has since arrived at the stadium and is preparing for kickoff, is one of the NFL's leading playmakers, earning All-Pro honors on five occasions. He has been selected for eight Pro Bowls and won the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020. The wideout led the league with 1,799 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns last season and is the centerpiece of head coach Mike McDaniel's dynamic offense.

The Dolphins' season begins with AFC South hopefuls Jacksonville on Sunday. Miami has high hopes of making a deep run in the playoffs this season after being defeated by the Chiefs in the wildcard round in January. But Hill's tangle with police is certainly an unwelcome distraction for the team just a few hours before the season begins.
