As New York Fashion Week has officially kicked off, we're taking a look back at some of the biggest controversies that have rocked the fashion world over the years.

This year's New York Fashion Week will be held from September 6 to September 11 in New York City at the the RXR's Starrett-Lehigh Building in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. NYFW is a bi-annual event during which leading designers from all around the world come together to showcase their newest collections and define the fashion trends for the coming season. During NYFW not only are there many glamorous runway shows but there are also many after parties where drama has previously unfolded among A-listers.

And while there has been controversy among the star-studded guests, fashion week is also famously known for designers, celebrities, and models using the platform to make political statements. And as the event is underway, we're going to take a look back at some of the most memorable scandals over the years.

This year's fashion show has already been met with controversy as Vogue's Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour and supermodel Naomi Campbell openly dissed each other on stage. Ahead of Tuesday night's Fashion Row Fashion Show and Style Awards in Harlem, New York, Naomi was reportedly running a bit late. And as she was running behind, Anna took the moment to call her out for her tardiness while she was on-stage presenting an award to the model.

At the podium Anna took a jab at Naomi as she said: “I am a very punctual person, and I have the honor of presenting tonight to someone who is often late.” After Anna stepped off the stage, Harper Bazaar's editor, Samira Nasr, instead took over her job. She announced Naomi as the recipient of the Fashion Icon Award before Naomi stepped up onto the stage to accept.

As Noami took the stage, she pointedly shaded Anna as she said: "Everything's meant to work out the way it's meant to work out. It wasn’t my choice to have the other lady [Anna]. I’d much rather have this."

In 2019, famous fashion designer Marc Jacobs was accused of "spitefully delaying" singer Rihanna's runaway show after he lost his time slot to the artist. Many accused Jacobs of purposefully running late to sabotage Rihanna's show after his event didn't start until an hour and a half later than it was initially slated to.

After the accusations that he was trying to ruin Rihanna's Savage x Fenty lingerie presentation, Jacobs' staff cleared the air as they issued a statement explaining the reasoning behind the unexpected delay. They told the Associated Press the runaway show started late due to a variety of reasons including “an errant clothing delivery, no doubt caught in rush-hour traffic, exacerbated by the rain.”

Designer Jeremy Scott's bold political statement

During designer Jeremy Scott's 2018 New York Fashion Week runaway show, he took a daring stance against former President Donald Trump and his nomination of controversial judge Brett Kavanaugh. As the designer was seen walking down the catwalk, he sported a bold white tee with black lettering that read: "Tell your senator NO on Kavanaugh" along with a phone number that people would call to air out their dissatisfaction with POTUS' picks for the Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh was known for his support of gun ownership including semiautomatic weapons and was showing signs that he would be in support of overturning the landmark case Roe v. Wade. Despite protests from many, Kavanaugh was later sworn into office in October of 2018.

At Harper's Bazaar Icons Party in 2018 during New York Fashion Week, rappers N icki Minaj and Cardi B's feud turned physical as they got into a heated brawl during the event. The fight broke out around 11 pm with onlookers claiming that it lasted around two minutes.

The fight initiated after Nicki reportedly purposefully stomped on Cardi's gown causing it to rip. After the fabric tore, Cardi was then seen taking off her shoe and attempting to throw it at Nicki but narrowly missed her. After the attempt, Nicki then reportedly pulled off Cardi's wig right from her head.

A party-goer at the event that witnessed the drama unfold told E! News: " I heard someone screaming — everyone recognized Cardi's voice. People either got out of the way or took out their phones and started filming. Nicki was surrounded by a bunch of guards and barely even looked at her. Next thing you know, shoes were flying and Cardi was on her way out."
