USWNT head coach Emma Hayes' massive Manchester United comparison sums up her mentality

Emma Hayes has enjoyed a golden start to life as United States Women's National Team head coach, and she has boldly compared herself to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former Manchester United boss is one of the most successful managers of all time, and Hayes believes she has a lot in common with the Scotsman – who oversaw a glorious 26-year tenure at Old Trafford with 13 Premier League titles before retiring in 2013.

Hayes had a comparable record in charge of Chelsea, winning seven Women's Super League titles in her 12 years at the helm. And she has started in a similar vein with the USWNT, claiming the gold medal in her first tournament in charge at the Paris Olympics last month.

  • The triumph ended a 12-year wait for Olympic glory, and Hayes has revealed Ferguson was the first to congratulate her when the USWNT secured gold with a 1-0 victory over Brazil.

“I see so much of myself in him,” Hayes told The Telegraph. "His was the first text I received when we won gold.”

USWNT fans need not worry about the prospect of Hayes jumping ship and taking charge of her native England if the job comes available in the near future. "Never say never" was her response to managing England one day, but the 47-year-old is planning on staying in the U.S. for at least five years, and she has loved every moment so far.

“There is such a different vibe working in the U.S.. Working in women’s sports is valued," she said. "I have always privately dreamt of coaching the US team and, yes, those formative years played a part in that. I haven’t necessarily seen the England path intuitively for me”.

Hayes also suggested it would take a hugely appealing offer for Hayes to move into the men's game, insisting her belief she holds one of the most coveted positions in the entire sport.

She explained: “Think about it from my perspective: how many jobs are going to be bigger than the one I have? So, I would have to give something up. Everyone talks about the men’s game but, I’m like, ‘Do you realize what I am doing?’ This for me is the pinnacle.”

Hayes has a hugely impressive record of nine wins from her opening 10 games with the USWNT, with the team yet to be beaten with her in charge. Her next assignment comes in October with back-to-back friendlies against Iceland in Austin and Nashville before facing Argentina in Louisville.

A blockbuster fixture follows in November, with Hayes returning to her homeland to face Sarina Wiegman's England at Wembley Stadium.
