'I told my sister her baby's name sounds like a dog and issued her a stark warning'

Naming a baby can be tough, and you've got to come to terms with the fact that not everyone is going to adore your chosen moniker .

But when one woman told the brutal 'truth' to her sister about the unique name she'd chosen, her sister was "angry" and said that she was being "disrespectful" to the child, as the name had a special meaning to her and her partner.

The woman admitted that when she heard what the little boy's name was she burst out "laughing" but was quickly confronted by her sister who asked her what was so funny.

Taking to Reddit , the woman wanted to know whether she'd done anything wrong by warning her sister to think twice about the name she'd given to her son.

She wrote: "My sister had a baby. I'm happy for her. Her baby's name is Ruff. It's Ruff. It sounds like a dog. I thought she was joking and laughed. I was wrong.

"She asked me why I was laughing. I said it sounded like a dog barking. 'Ruff ruff?' I thought we were laughing, but she got mad. She was angry."

Her sister branded her as "disrespectful" saying that the name had "meaning to her and her husband" because they "love an obscure video game character".

The woman issued her sister a warning though, saying that she could "name her child whatever she wants", however, it "might be hard for him in school" thanks to the dog associations.

WARNING: The post below contains explicit language

"She won't return my texts or calls. My mom says I should have kept my mouth shut. Am I the only one seeing this?" she asked.

In the comments, someone backed her, saying: "Okay, yeah, you could have handled it better but that's a ridiculous name for a child. I'm already cringing at the jokes coming once he's older. 'Hi, my name is Ruff'. 'Oh, is that because your parents were doing it doggy-style when you were conceived?'"

Someone added: "Along with a rousing chorus of 'Who let the dogs out'." Another said: "God help that poor boy if he's in any kinda schooling but homeschooling".
