Matthew Stafford's four-word response to being booed by Detroit Lions fans

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford said that the boos he receives from Detroit Lions fans no longer phase him. Stafford, who spent the first 12 years of his NFL career in Detroit before being traded to the Rams, received the jeer treatment after yet another loss to his former organization.

Stafford had a demanding day under center during the primetime Sunday night matchup, throwing the ball 49 times—nearly double the attempts of Detroit’s Jared Goff , who threw 28 passes. Stafford completed 34 attempts for 317 yards, one touchdown, and an interception.

Despite his late-game efforts to sling the ball downfield for chunk yardage, the Rams lost 26-20 in overtime , with Lions running back David Montgomery sealing the game with an effective eight-play drive that ended with a touchdown. Montgomery was featured in five plays during the drive, setting up the score before finally punching it in.

After the game, Stafford addressed being booed by the roars of 66,530 hometown fans. But after having a similar experience last season, the Rams QB is no longer worried about the noise. "I am, yeah," said Stafford when asked if he was over the booing. "It’s fine with me." He then told reporters that Detroit is "just another place to play" after spending most of his career there.

Last season, the entire Stafford family was booed at Ford Field after the Lions defeated the Rams in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs . The boos that echoed in the stadium were mostly directed at his wife, Kelly, and four children, prompting her to respond on social media.

"It's sports. The city wants to win," wrote Kelly on her Instagram story. "Everything is fair game, except the fans who booed my children. Other than that, I loved the atmosphere, and the booing just gave my husband more fire," she continued. "The more you love, the more you hate. I consider it all love going both ways. And now that we are out, I hope the Lions bring home a Lombardi to that city because that feeling is like no other. Go get it."

Due to the treatment received from the fanbase, Kelly revealed on her podcast that she would not be at Sunday's game but instead would watch at home with her children. She said, "The last memory I have wasn’t that great."

The Stafford family remains heavily involved in the city through charities and building community programs. Before the Week 1 matchup, Kelly even visited the Kelly & Matthew Stafford & Friends Education Center, which they helped develop last April as part of the SAY Detroit Play Center at Lipke Park.

"This city has done so much for us, that it's hard for me to let go of it," she said. "It's hard for me to ever root against them." Stafford's wife wrapped up her interview by saying that no matter how loud or often Matthew is booed, she will continue to root for the city.
