Why Travis Kelce will not be at VMA Awards with Taylor Swift as history repeats itself

Taylor Swift will attend the MTV Video Music Awards without Travis Kelce on Wednesday night despite being nominated for 12 different honors, the most out of all artists involved.

Swift continues to dominate the music scene and her "Eras Tour" success has made her the talking point of the past year. The singer could be in for a big night, as she has a chance to surpass Beyoncé's record of 25 solo VMA wins.

While Swift would like Kelce to attend, due to his commitments with the Kansas City Chiefs he is unable to take time off to be in New York on Wednesday night. The Chiefs are preparing to face the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday and will be practicing throughout the week.

Kelce has already been hanging out with Swift in New York after flying out of Kansas City on Friday morning, as the Chiefs began the NFL season on Thursday night. Kelce and Swift were joined by Patrick and Brittany Mahomes , as they observed a double date while watching the U.S. Open final.

Swift will look to sweep up at the VMAs, but this isn't the first time that football has got in the way of Kelce supporting her. When Swift was attending the Grammys in February the Chiefs had just flown to Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII, meaning Kelce had to skip the ceremony as he was with the team.

"I wish I could go support Taylor at the Grammys, and watch her win every single award that she’s nominated for," Kelce said during an interview on "The Pat McAfee Show" at the time. "But I think I’ve got practice on Sunday."

"Unfortunately, I’ve gotta get ready for this big old Super Bowl that we’ve got in a week," Kelce added. The Chiefs star managed to watch Swift win her awards, as he was seen streaming the ceremony on his phone when stepping off the plane with his team.

It was also a topic of interest as Kelce addressed the media on Super Bowl Opening Night as he praised Swift. "She’s unbelievable," Kelce told reporters. "She’s rewriting the history books herself. I told her I’d have to hold up my end of the bargain and bring home some hardware too."

Swift ended up attending the Super Bowl after taking a 10-hour flight from Tokyo the night before and saw Kelce win his second-straight championship with the Chiefs. The gesture became the main story of the Super Bowl and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid praised both Swift and Kelce after concerns were raised that the NFL could become distracted by the attention.

"She’s been great," Reid said of Swift in an interview on the "Let’s Go!" podcast hosted by Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray. "Listen, she’s a good girl and I’m happy for Trav, and there has been no distraction that way at all. Trav’s handled it right, she’s handled it right, and we just move forward, so it hasn’t been a problem at all."
