Chet Hanks has bravely opened up about being sober after his struggles with drug addiction since he was 16.

The 34-year-old, who is the oldest son of Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks as well as actress and singer Rita Wilson, hoped by telling his story he would help other people. In an exclusive chat with The Mirror, rapper Chet, who rocked a black printed leather jacket and a vest top at the MTV VMAs on Wednesday, opened up about life lately. It comes after the star went to rehab back in 2014 to seek help for his drug problem after "struggling" since he was 16.

He has been determined to leave that life behind him, and Chet said: "I'm open about it because there's a lot of people that struggle with it. A lot of people that die from it. When someone hears my story and finds out I'm sober, then maybe they will think maybe it will be more cool to be sober. Sobriety doesn't have to be this really boring journey, it's like really fun.

"I think I have more fun sober than I did before when I was getting f---ed up. If I inspire somebody else to clean up their life then that's why I'm open about it." Speaking about how he copes with 'rough days' in his journey, Chet shared: "I don't have rough days anymore. The worst day I have sober is better than the best day I had when I was on drugs."

Meanwhile just last month Chet gave extraordinary insight into how it was growing up with famous parents.

On the Tuesday, July 23, season premiere of MTV's reality show, Surreal Life: Villa of Secret , the actor detailed the experience of growing up in a famous household and how it wasn't something that inspired feelings of awe especially with the way people perceived him and his three siblings.

"People think that being Tom Hanks' son, like, I would grow up feeling like I was the s---. I'll tell you something about my childhood." Chet explained. "I actually grew up feeling completely f---ing worthless."

But it was not his parents that made it hard for Chet, it was the way people around him would react to that information. Chet shared to his castmates how those people would treat him as if he thought he was better than them, which he didn't think himself. He "just wanted to be friends with everybody and be treated like everybody else."

"But what am I supposed to do? Walk through the doors and be all meek and timid? That was a mind f--- for me to deal with." Chet added: "Cause then if you do walk in through the door and you're like, 'Here I am mother f---er,' it's like, 'Oh look at you arrogant son of a b----'"

The 33-year-old continued: "So I did internalize all that negativity. I'd be like ‘Wow, maybe I am f---ing worthless,' you know what I’m saying? So it was a battle for me mentally and emotionally, just to be able to walk outside, look someone in the eye, say, ’What's up? I'm Chet.'"
