Caitlin Clark's admission of how difficult it is to play against A'ja Wilson was on full display Wednesday night.
Facing off against the Indiana Fever, the presumptive WNBA MVP displayed a skillset that made her almost impossible to guard. Whether it was in the mid-range, the post, against one, two or three defenders, it didn't matter as Wilson feasted on whoever the Fever decided to throw at her.
What's more, Wilson only needed 11 points to break the WNBA's all-time single season-scoring record of 939 points, which was set by Jewell Loyd in 2023. Not only did Wilson break the record, but she did it handily and in a win, further cementing the Las Vegas Aces as one of the best teams in the league.
In spite of stiff resistance, Wilson scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. As of writing, Wilson has 956 points on the year and has a chance to surpass 1,000 points in a single season. Given the Aces have four games left in the season, Wilson will need to score at least 11 points per game to blow past the 1,000-point mark.
Wilson's dominance showed how Clark's admission regarding the rest of the WNBA's inability to guard the generational talent. Before the Fever's matchup with the Aces, the 22-year-old told reporters what it is like to face off against Wilson, knowing there is very little the defense can do to stop her.
"She’s pretty incredible," Clark said. "You watch her and it’s just unguardable... everybody in the league knows you can’t guard it, you basically live with what she’s going to do to you every single night. You contain it as best you can."
After Wilson broke the record, her former coach at South Carolina Dawn Staley took to X to congratulate her former star. "Giving @_ajawilson22 her flowers for breaking the single season scoring record for most points in a @WNBA season.....when the love comes from love and loved ones it's fulfilling enough!"
What's more, Alysha Clark shared what it meant to be on the same team as Wilson and to have played with the star forward on her record-breaking night. "She is a superstar but you would never know it being in her presence," an emotional Clark told reporters .
"Being a leader is hard in itself, but being a superstar plus leadership, like that's insane. That's why only a select few get that title, that job opportunity and A'ja exemplifies every bit of that."
Although the Fever rookie gave Wilson her flowers along with her teammates, the 28-year-old made sure to give credit to her teammates for the success she's had. "I'm so grateful to be able to play with just - and I said it on the broadcast before - just selfless women," Wilson said after the win. "They give it their all every single day and that's what I love the most.
"I don't get 0 points, obviously, without them passing me the basketball... The points are great, they're always going to be there, I'm never going to stop shooting. But the group that we have in this locker room is something that I am so genuinely happy to be around. So I'm super blessed to be able to do what I do with the people that I do. I credit it all to them."
