Bill Belichick tipped for 'enticing' first role since New England Patriots exit

The New York Giants have been told that Bill Belichick would likely love to become the team's head coach should the opportunity arise amid their worrying start to the season.

The Giants opened up their season with a 28-6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings - a team who many expected to struggle this year without their starting quarterback after losing JJ McCarthy to a season-ending injury . This comes off the back of a dismal 2023 season, that saw New York go 6-11 while having severe issues across their roster - including their long-term answer at quarterback.

Current head coach Brian Daboll won Coach of the Year in 2022 after leading the team to the playoffs, but is now under immense pressure to quickly turn their fortunes around, with Belichick being available to rejoin the team he spent 11 years with as their defensive coordinator.

One of Belichick's former players with the New England Patriots , Julian Edelman, has stated that he believes the head coach would love to join the team.

Speaking on Colin Cowherd's 'The Herd' show on FOX, Edelman said: "I think the situation has to be right. North east probably helps. He's got family there. The real enticing one to me is if the New York Giants open up."

He added: "I remember vividly any time we played in New York, or we played the Giants, you could just see a little like jingle in Belichick's spirit. He loved talking about those old Giants teams, and he loved talking about that organization. You know, you could tell that he loved the New York Giants."

Belichick had been among the favorites to land the Atlanta Falcons head coaching job this offseason, but the team surprisingly chose to instead hire Raheem Morris - leaving the former without a gig.

Over the summer, the 72-year-old had been announced to be joining "Inside the NFL", before then joining Peyton Manning on his "Manningcast" program with brother Eli on ESPN's coverage of Monday Night Football.

Belichick was then confirmed to be a contributor for the Pat McAfee Show throughout the season, while also joining Underdog Fantasy alongside his former assistant Matt Patricia where he will be on numerous podcasts, including two of the biggest show's in the industry in Sam Monson and Steve Palazzolo and Dan Hanzus and Marc Sessler's new shows after leaving PFF and the NFL Network, respectively.
