Rory McIlroy 'facing public humiliation' as unseen U.S. Open footage set to be released

Footage of Rory McIlroy's U.S. Open locker room fallout is set to be unveiled to the public next year, following the golfer's late-game collapse at Pinehurst and his view from the clubhouse as Bryson DeChambeau snatched victory.

McIlroy was on track for his first major win since 2014 before he bogeyed three of the last four holes, including two short putts after not missing a putt inside three feet all season.

Instead, the Northern Irish star had to watch on as DeChambeau capitalized on his misfortune, before more drama unfolded behind the scenes with Netflix's "Full Swing" documentary - with season three scheduled to air in 2025.

McIlroy was unexpectedly trailed into the locker rooms by the documentary crew, still reeling from his last-hole meltdown at Pinehurst, as a top USGA official reportedly had to intervene and halt proceedings. An angry McIlroy quickly left the course and skipped his media obligations, before announcing a break from golf, swiftly following a tense moment in the champions' changing area.

McIlroy, who was allowed to use the space as the 2011 tournament winner, was gathering his belongings in an attempt to leave the premises quietly. However, he and his team were followed by a crew carrying a camera and a boom microphone. USGA CEO Mike Whan paused his preparations for the tournament presentations to intervene, asking security guards: "Do we want them in here?"

Whan displayed empathy towards McIlroy during a tough time and recognized that the Netflix crew did not reciprocate this, eager to document the runner-up's raw emotions immediately following his heart-wrenching loss.

There were uncertainties about whether "Full Swing" would get a third season, even as filming of McIlroy and his peers persisted, with the world number three possibly hoping his post-U.S. Open reactions wouldn't see the light of day.

Back in March, the series' producer Chad Mumm held onto hopes for another run, awaiting the green-light from Netflix with no clear signal. Speaking to Golf Monthly, he said: "We haven't announced any official confirmation of that yet (a third series being confirmed). We're waiting with bated breath as I hope the rest of the world are."

However, fans worldwide will be privy to the torrent of feelings McIlroy experienced as he succumbed to DeChambeau, who declared that he "never would have wished it on anybody." Though no release date has been set, Netflix's proclamation confirms "Full Swing: will return in 2025.
