The New York Giants brutal 28-6 home defeat at the hands of Minnesota Vikings could not have gone worse for Giants quarterback Daniel Jones - both on and off the field.

Jones completed just 22 of his 42 passes for 186 yards against Minnesota. He threw two interceptions, was sacked five times, and rushed for just 15 yards. Fans recorded themselves burning his jersey in the parking lots outside of MetLife Stadium following the loss.

Jones was heckled as he exited the stadium, as fans chanted: "Danny I need a mill." Some interpolated his nickname of "Danny Dimes" and called him "Danny Pennies." Ahead of their Week 2 divisional matchup with the Washington Commanders , Jones seemed compassionate towards the jeering supporters.

"Fans are upset, frustrated. We're frustrated too. So I understand that," Jones said . "I'm not easily offended. I understand how it works. I understand that. I'm not easily offended. I understand how it works. I have to play better. We all have to play better."

Giants fans are particularly aggrieved at the size of Jones's enormous contract, signed following a breakout 2022 season. Jones guided New York to a surprising 9-6-1 recorded and threw for 3205 yards with a 15-5 TD-INT ratio to go along with 708 yards on the ground.

That offseason, General Manager Joe Schoen inked their incumbent starter to a massive four-year, $160 million contract with a staggering $81 million guaranteed upon signing.

The 2019 first-round pick was certainly coming off a promising season and deserved a deal promising short-term security as the Giants starter. However, many NFL executives were left wondering exactly who New York was bidding against at that price point.

If the Giants were to release Jones this offseason, they would still see a $22 million dead cap hit against their 2025 salary cap. That's not backbreaking, but it certainly could have been avoided two offseasons prior.

"Danny Dimes" is still optimistic he can silence the haters this season. More importantly, Jones still has the support of his head coach Brian Daboll . "He's someone that I talk to every day," Daboll said of his beleaguered quarterback. "We talk about the discipline to do things right on and off the field like he always does, having a positive attitude regardless of situation.

"It's never easy when you lose a game, or you don't play well, or you don't coach well.... keeping a positive attitude, doing the things that you need to do each and every week to prepare for a game, which he'll do. And then handling things with the right mindset. Be able to persevere through things, let your passion show, have competitive stamina."
