Travis Hunter proves Deion Sanders right with outrageous display in Colorado win

Travis Hunter's two-way dominance against Colorado State showed and proved Colorado head coach Deion Sanders correct in his assessment.

In Colorado's 28-7 win over Colorado State, Hunter's fingerprints were all over the game. Against Colorado State, Hunter had 13 receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns, and on defense, the star had four tackles, one pass broken up and one interception.

This calls to mind Sanders' comments before the season, making it clear how he views Hunter, his two-way star. “But the kid is, to me, the best football player in the nation," Sanders said, per On3 .

"And I think we have two of the top football players in the nation, and I think we’re going to - you’re gonna see a couple more catapult themselves into that early first round. We have those type of players in our locker room.”

And while his production early in the season is impressive, some questioned his status as one of the best players in the country . Before the start of the 2024 college football season, many considered Hunter to be one of if not the, best players in the nation.

However, EA Sports believed otherwise, electing to give him a 95 overall in "College Football 2025," one of seven players to have that rating. When asked what he thought about Hunter's overall in the video game, Sanders admitted he did not care for what overall EA Sports gave his young star, focusing on the actual game on the field.

“I don’t know nothing about that video game,” Sanders said at the time. “I’m not a video game guy. I love video games but I’m a real game guy. I don’t know. Like, you guys talk about ratings and rankings, I don’t know about that stuff.”

Sanders also shared his thoughts on his son Shedeur having the same overall as Carson Beck at 93. While addressing his two stars' video game ratings, the elder Sanders revealed he found it incredulous that both his son and Hunter were not the best players in the game.

"And how can Travis not have the highest score on the game when he’s arguably the best receiver and the best defensive back in college football?" Sanders - also known as "Coach Prime" - pondered. "So, how can you not be the number one rated guy, period? I don’t understand that either."

Sanders isn't the only one who believes Hunter's incredible talent can lead to amazing results. Former Alabama star Greg McElroy made it clear that Hunter can be a generational talent if all the pieces fall correctly for the young star.

"How great of a football player he is, it's absolutely ridiculous with all of the different things he can do," McElroy said. "The speed and how quickly he gets to full speed and his body control when the ball is in the air is just off-the-charts good.

"I was blown away by his performance last week and I continue to be amazed by what a great football player he is... I think Travis Hunter is a receiver in the league because his ball skills are absolutely off the charts."
