A six-month-old baby was found covered in blood with bone exposed after being attacked and bitten more than 50 times by rats as he lay in a bassinet in his parents' filthy Indiana home . The tot, who investigators say will now be permanently disfigured, was raced to hospital after almost being bitten to death by rodents.

Horrified police found the baby in the shocking state after being called to the home in 2023 when dad David Schonabaum says he found the unnamed 6-month-old covered in blood. Doctors reported the infant endured over 50 bites on his forehead, cheek, and nose. Moreover, the child's right hand was missing flesh on all four fingers and thumb, revealing bone at the tips of each digit.

The most gravely affected were the index and pinky fingers, which authorities noted were "missing the flesh halfway down each finger ." The baby also sustained further bites to his arms, legs, feet, and toes.

During the trial, prosecutors urged the jury to find fault with the father for neglect that allowed his home's squalid state to escalate into a dire situation that ended in the child being eaten alive.

In their concluding remarks, the prosecutors recounted how Schonabaum's child would suffer lasting disfigurement from living in what was described by the attorney as an "unclean, unsanitary, rat-infested house."

They maintained he persistently ignored the worsening conditions at home "knowingly," despite repeated warnings from DCS over two years to improve the households condition.

Additionally, after a pest control expert supplied Schonabaum with 5-to-10 reusable rat traps on multiple occasions, there was no evidence to suggest they had ever been used.

Schonabaum was convicted of one count of Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury involving his 6-month-old infant. He will be sentenced on October 2. The child is now recovering.
