Trevor Lawrence four-word message gives Louis Rees-Zammit NFL hope

Trevor Lawrence succinctly summed up the Jacksonville Jaguars' offensive woes after falling to 0-2 on the NFL season on Sunday.

"We suck right now," the quarterback admitted in a message that should galvanize former rugby superstar Louis Rees-Zammit as he vies to make the Jags' active roster after joining the practice squad.

The former Wales international, 23, was snapped up by the Kansas City Chiefs after impressing in the NFL's International Player Pathway Program earlier this year, and he featured in all of Kansas City's preseason games as a running back and special teams player.

  • But he was cut at the end of training camp when the roster was whittled down to 53 players. The Jags handed Rees-Zammit a lifeline after he cleared waivers, moving him to wide receiver and adding him to the practice squad.

With just three games of professional football experience to his name, "Rees Lightning" will have to bide his time and learn his craft before getting an opportunity. But the door could be opening for him to get some playing time this season after the Jags fell to a second successive defeat on Sunday.

After blowing a lead at the Miami Dolphins in Week 1, the Jags slumped to an 18-13 defeat to the Cleveland Browns on home turf at TIAA Bank Field. Former No. 1 overall pick Lawrence completed just 14 of 30 passes for 220 yards without a touchdown, and he pulled no punches in his assessment of the Jags' dismal offensive play.

"It's pretty shocking to me. We had a great offseason, a great training camp. We've got to figure it out," Lawrence said. "[We need to] look at ourselves in the mirror and see what we can do better.

"It's on all of us. We all have to look at that and just put emphasis on communication. It's day one stuff. It's simple stuff."

Rees-Zammit has faced criticism from some corners of social media since transitioning to the NFL, having failed to make a splash in his three preseason cameos. But he is fully focused on realizing his dream of becoming a fully-fledged NFL player.

"I don't really care about haters," Rees-Zammit told the BBC soon after joining the Jags. "They can say what they want behind their phones, behind their laptops making comments.

"I don't listen to that kind of stuff. I know what I've got to do to be successful and they can write all they want. I'm working really hard on this dream and I've got to try and do as much as I can every day to be a better football player and a better person."

The Jags return to action win Week 3 on Monday Night Football, facing a tough challenge on the road at the Buffalo Bills (2-0).
