Cam Newton launches rant at Tyreek Hill for putting himself 'in danger' before arrest

Former NFL star Cam Newton condemned Tyreek Hill ’s actions when detained by police and insisted the Miami Dolphins receiver put himself “in danger”.

Earlier this month, Hill was pulled over and detained by Miami-Dade Police outside of Hard Rock Stadium ahead of the Dolphins’ 20-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars to open the 2024 NFL season. Authorities released bodycam footage , which showed several officers approaching Hill’s car and tensions escalated with one officer in particular using excessive force to detain the 30-year-old.

Newton decided to chime in on the scandal, which became one of the biggest storylines of Week 1. The 2015 NFL MVP walked his audience through the footage of Hill being detained, pausing to comment and give his take on events.

After rolling several seconds of footage that showed a Miami-Dade officer approach Hill’s car window, Newton, on his “4thand1show”, said: “Bro, comply!… I’m just trying to keep you alive! Like real s***, because I’m not talking to Tyreek Hill more than I’m talking to everybody else that’s going to get pulled over on a day-to-day basis.”

When the video showed Hill rolling his window up, Newton shouted: “You don’t get no type of privilege bro! When you roll the window down and you roll the window back up? Bro, don’t do that, you can’t do that… It puts you in danger.

“And you have to put yourself in that officer's position, he don’t know what the hell is in that damn car… This could have been avoided… the reason why the officers are frustrated is because you rolled your window up. He (the officer) was excessive. I’m not taking no officer’s side, that’s what I’m not doing. I'm trying to say how this situation could have been played out a little different.”

After asking Hill several times to keep his window down, one officer decided to remove the receiver from the vehicle. Another official promptly came over and whipped open the door before pulling him out of the vehicle by the back of his neck.

Moments later, Hill was escorted to the sidewalk and asked to sit down but momentarily refused citing recent surgery, and the same officer that pulled him out of the car subsequently wrapped an arm around him and forcefully took him down, which prompted Newton to say: “Now we’re talking about certain things that is a normal routine day for a black person in America.

“ So why wouldn’t we make this a big thing to talk about ‘cus we can save somebody’s life. We can really help people more than just saying, ‘Ah damm, that’s f***ed up what they did to Tyreek.’ Like no, bro, we gotta hold accountability on both sides. These things are necessary… it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Hill - who admitted wrongdoing on his part in his arrest - later suited up against the Jags and scored a stunning 80-yard touchdown, sensationally celebrating his score by having teammate Jaylen Waddle mimic arresting and placing handcuffs on the receiver . One of the officers involved in the incident - later named as veteran officer Danny Torres - has been placed on administrative leave amid an investigation by the Miami-Dade Police Department.
