A South Carolina teen was reportedly killed in a shooting mere weeks before completing his GED and after becoming a brand-new father. Police report that Kashaan Damon Sims was the victim of a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning in West Columbia.

Police say that the shooting took place around 3:00am at the 900 block of Center Street, reports NBC affiliate WIS-TV. The Lexington County coroner said that the body of 29-year-old Alvin Davonte McDaniel Jr. was found alongside Sims when police arrived at the scene.

According to the outlet, McDaniel Jr. had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his lower body and was rushed to the hospital. However, it was later reported that he had died due to the severity of the wounds.

Authorities told the out that a third victim, who has yet to be named, was taken to a local hospital and treated for a gunshot wound but was later released. A relative of Sims later told CBS affiliate WLTX that he was mere weeks away from getting his GED and was working at a local Taco Bell. The same relative also said that Sims had just become a father.

"He was so excited," Alexis Sims told the outlet. "He was a happy kid {and} it saddens me his life was took away so early."

West Columbia Police Chief Marion Boyce also issued a statement to the outlet. In the statement, Boyce called the shoot an "isolated incident."

"We want to assure the residents of West Columbia that there is no active threat to our community," he said. "Your safety is our top priority."

"The West Columbia Police Department is fully engaged and working tirelessly, as well as collaborating with neighboring jurisdictions, to thoroughly investigate this case and ensure our community's continued safety and security." As of Tuesday, police have yet to reveal a motive behind the shooting or if they have made any arrests.

The South Carolina shooting comes after a Georgia mother was shot and killed by her husband who then turned the gun on himself after a divorce hearing.

According to an officer, the couple — identified as Mr. and Mrs. Mallory — had just left a court hearing and got into separate cars. The officer then stated that the car carrying the husband pulled alongside the car containing his ex-wife and shot her through his passenger window.

Mr. Mallory was then pursued by police before he pulled over and shot himself in the head. The officer commented that Mallory survived the self-inflicted injury. According to the officer, law enforcement officials did everything in their power and slammed the person who started the rumor that Mrs. Mallory had asked deputies for an escort.

"Clerks in the Magistrate Office were asked, not a Deputy, and a Deputy was never requested by anyone to escort her," the Sheriff wrote in a Facebook post . "Video from the lobby shows that as Mrs. Mallory walked through the lobby, she passed Deputies and did not ask for assistance either."

I wrote an article about two months ago about the state passing a new gun law . If u are 18 years of age, you can carry a gun without a license. Think about that in a state where the proliferation of guns is out of control. I surmised what I thought would transpire. People today are carrying weapons of mass destruction and getting in arguments and without taught, taking lives today as young as 13 years old. Police walking into situations where people are now armed and dangerous. We can address a lot of these problems, but people have to have the will to want better. And it starts in Congress. Our kids are being killed, and we have a congress that is impotent .
