3 Russell Wilson landing spots as Mike Tomlin announces Pittsburgh Steelers' Justin Fields plan

Quarterback Justin Fields has been named the Pittsburgh Steelers starter for a third successive week as veteran Russell Wilson continues to battle a lingering calf injury .

"As I sit here today, Russ[el Wilson] is not scheduled to be a full participant in practice [Wednesday]," head coach Mike Tomlin said. "We're ready in a plan that features Justin and his readiness."

Fields has led the Steelers to a 2-0 record with 357 total yards of offense and a touchdown. Most importantly, the former Chicago Bear has yet to turn the ball over.

Though Tomlin emphasized that "the depth chart has not changed," could the Steelers field a Wilson trade ? Here are three potential landing spots for the veteran quarterback:

    MIAMI DOLPHINS

Following incumbent starter Tua Tagovailoa's brutal concussion against the Buffalo Bills, the Dolphins signed former Ravens backup quarterback Tyler Huntley to push Skylar Thompson for the starting spot.

Former Jets head coach Rex Ryan suggested on ESPN's Get Up said Wilson would be "the number one guy would call" after Tagovailoa's diagnosis. Darrell Bevell, the current Dolphins QB coach and passing game coordinator, served as Wilson's offensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks from 2012-2017.

    CAROLINA PANTHERS

The Carolina Panthers recently decided to move beleaguered second-year pro-Bryce Young to the bench in favor of veteran Andy Dalton following the team's 26-3 drubbing at the hands of the Las Angeles Chargers.

Considering how much the Panthers invested in Young to take him with the first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft (two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and DJ Moore), they're probably not ready to fully abandon their young signal-caller.

Wilson, a short quarterback in the mold of Young, could fill in more competently for Carolina than Daulton and wouldn't fully compromise Young's development. Plus, new head coach Dave Canales has gotten a tune out of forgotten quarterbacks like Baker Mayfield and Geno Smith before.

    NEW YORK GIANTS

Following their 0-2 start, the New York Giants may decide to fully commit to the tank and line themselves up to take either Georgia quarterback Carson Beck or Colorado starter Shedeur Sanders.

The team could easily decide to move on from incumbent QB Daniel Jones, who can be released this offseason for a $22 million dead-money cap hit.

In that case, a starting spot could open for someone like Wilson. Outside of the Tennessee Titans, the gig in New York could be Wilson's only chance to see starting action in the NFL this season.
