Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood learn LIV Golf fate after 'disappointing' 2024 season

Despite a challenging season on the golf course for Majesticks GC, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood will continue as playing captains in the LIV Golf setup in 2025.

They are co-captains of the all-European Majesticks team alongside Henrik Stenson, with Sam Horsfield rounding out the team. The group has had a tough time making an impact in 2024, finishing the regular campaign tied for 10th in the season-long standings among the 13 LIV franchises.

Throughout this season's 13 events, the European team hasn't managed to secure a spot on the team podium, finishing fourth in an event three times, including last week in Chicago.

  • PGA Tour players' stance very clear on what LIV Golf rebels must do for merger
  • Jon Rahm handed LIV Golf boost as solution found after 'windy' admission
  • Information about the contracts LIV captains have with the breakaway league is limited. However, it was revealed before last week's event at Bolingbrook that all 13 captains could face relegation from the league if they ended up in the drop zone - a fate Bubba Watson of RangeGoats experienced.

Poulter also found himself precariously close to the relegation spots, but a season-best finish in Chicago moved him up the rankings. While it's clear that Poulter and Westwood are nearer to the end of their playing days than the beginning, it seems these two stalwarts of European golf still have much to contribute on the course.

Majesticks Team Principal James Dunkley has confirmed to Golf Magic that the team's roster will stay the same for 2025, expressing satisfaction with the current lineup despite a less than ideal season. He said: "Yes, we will remain unchanged in 2025 and are very happy with our lineup."

He acknowledged the team's struggles but remains optimistic about their performance at the upcoming Team Championship in Dallas.

"Overall, it has been disappointing," he admitted. "Tied 10th in the Order of Merit is not where we want to be but there have been signs of improvements vs last year and we came extremely close to winning two events in 2024 in Hong Kong and Chicago. We have an opportunity to finish on a high this week and take these improvements into 2025."

Poulter secured his first top-five finish of the season in Chicago and although he didn't clinch the title, falling behind champion Jon Rahm, he shared his enthusiasm for his performance.

"It's nice to roll a few putts in. It's nice to finally have a look at a leaderboard and seeing yourself up this end, which is refreshing," Poulter reflected last weekend. "It's nice. It's a confidence boost, I think, for the team to come out on a course especially as difficult as this one is and kind of be in position.

"It's good. In amongst a year where we've been kind of propping up the rear end of that league, it's great to see us up at the front. It really is. I think everyone should be pretty proud of where we are right now."
