Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman left her team's NWSL clash with Kansas City Current in a wheelchair after suffering a severe back spasm.

The daughter of NBA legend Dennis , the 22-year-old experienced a summer to remember as she won a gold medal with Team USA at the Olympics in Paris earlier this year. However, the youngster was left in agony after a clash with opposition player Temwa Chawinga left her sprawled on the ground in the 75th minute of Washington's 3-0 loss.

Rodman had been shielding the ball when her rival's knee appeared to catch her back, as she winced in pain after hitting the deck. From there, physios tended to her as she sat hunched over as it became clear that she would be unable to continue during the second half of the game.

  • The starlet has experienced back spasms previously in her career after being the youngest player to be drafted in the league's history back in 2021. This latest recurrence of the issue left Rodman unable to leave the field of her own accord, with the striker eventually taken to the locker room via a wheelchair.

Following on from the incident, Rodman's agent Mike Senkowski informed The Washington Post that his client had experienced an "intense back spasm". The player's representative also confirmed that she had avoided a major injury, saying: "Still in a [lot] of pain, but I’m hopeful [she] avoided a very serious injury."

The prodigy was able to return to the Washington bench before the end of the game, with her head coach Jonatan Giraldez confirming that he had no knowledge on whether Rodman could be sidelined. He said: "I have no information now. Tri was on the bench in the end. She felt something in her back.

The team's next game is against Angel City FC in Los Angeles on September 28, with the Rodman's condition still unknown at the time of writing. The striker has contributed eight goals and six assists as the team chases NWSL Shield glory - while sitting seven points adrift of the Orlando Pride at the summit of the standings.

Spirit coach Giraldez admitted that there would now be a wait for further details on the player's fitness ahead of the trip to California. He said: "Now is too soon. We have to come back tomorrow to Washington, and let’s see there what happened and what is the availability for the players to play games in Los Angeles next week."

As for his team's performance in the damaging defeat, he added: "We knew exactly how they created chances, and the first situation was a bad defensive action. We were clinical against them one month ago, and they were clinical today."
