Colorado legend weighs in on field-storming drama – 'I think the problem is you'

Former Colorado star Joel Klatt has passionately defended Buffaloes' fans after they stormed the field following Saturday's remarkable overtime victory over Baylor.

Fans poured onto the turf at Folsom Field after Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter inspired an incredible comeback from the Buffs. Quarterback Sanders found wideout LaJohntay Wester in the endzone with a Hail Mary as time expired to tie the game at 31-31.

Running back Micah Welch put Colorado ahead in overtime before two-way sensation Hunter caused a fumble at the goalline to ice the game and improve the Buffs to 3-1 on the season.

Thousands of fans rushed onto the field after an epic victory – Colorado's first in the Big 12 since joining the conference after the collapse of the Pac 12, although many viewers were quick to mock the scene on social media, claiming it was a huge overreaction for a regular-season victory over an unranked opponent.

Buffs head coach Deion Sanders admitted he had mixed feelings about the storming of the field, denying him the chance to meet with Baylor HC Dave Aranda on the field after the game. But the NFL Hall of Famer said part of him loved what he saw from Colorado's fans.

"I want to apologize to the opposition for the way we stormed the field and I didn't get an opportunity to go and shake the head coach's hand," he said. "I did try to go over to the locker room and waited out until he came out but I don't think they got the word to him because that's not professional I wanted to shake his hand and acknowledge [him].

"I don't like what transpired at the end of the game but I love what transpired at the end of the game. We have a fanbase that's phenomenal we have some young kids on this campus who love and and breathe CU football and I'm thankful."

Klatt, FOX Sports' leading college football analyst, played quarterback for the Buffs from 2002-05, setting numerous school records as a three-year starter. The 42-year-old echoed Sanders' verdict and slammed people who criticized the storming of the field.

"There's a lot of opinions about storming the field rolling around social media about Colorado and this or that. I totally agree with [Deion Sanders]," Klatt said on his self-titled podcast. "In general, I feel like you should only storm the field for giant moments, I feel like you should only storm the field for spectacular moments. But guess what? That was one of them.

"They just tied the game with a Hail Mary and then forced a fumble to win in overtime. What do you want them to do? That's what makes football, and college football specifically, so amazing.

"Now if you just win a run-of-the-mill game, do we really need to storm the field? But my goodness, are we really too good for college kids running onto the football field? If you have a problem with that, with the way that the game went and ended, I think the problem is you."

The Buffs are back in Big 12 action again on Saturday, traveling to Orlando to take on UCF (3-0) at FBC Mortgage Stadium. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Typical CU response! And everyone wants to make this about race. Nope. It’s the narcissistic, hypocritical, blame someone else culture that dates back to when McCartney left! Klatt is a full blown dbag. He was when he was there, he is now!
