The Masked Singer fans overwhelmed by Buffalo twist as boy band cameo gives major clue

The Masked Singer is back for another season.

Season 12 premiered on Wednesday, September 25 and it started off with a bang with its first mystery performance. Before the show went into the performances for the first five masked contestants, William Shatner opened the show with narration following returning judge Rita Ora performing Who Can It Be Now? by Men at Work. Original judges Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg and Ken Jeong also came back. Rita Ora first made her appearance on the American iteration of the FOX singing competition show for season 11, replacing Nicole Scherzinger.

Host Nick Cannon is also back and shared that for the first time ever, they will have previous masked singers who are connected to the current competing masked singers introduce them. Nick Lachey, who won season five, introduced the Buffalo.

When the Buffalo was talking, there was no clue there was going to be more than one of them. All their clues felt singular from Betty White to starring in two of the biggest sitcoms. The Buffalo began singing I [Just] Died In Your Arms by Cutting Crew and then another Buffalo came out and a third from across the stage on a chicken popped to round out the performance. The judges looked gleefully surprised with Ken calling them 'a herd.'

Fans also on social media were gobsmacked to see this rare display of more than one masked singer in a round. They also began to speculate who the trio could be. One fan wrote: "Hold on what’s happening?! So I have to guess three of them? Oh boy." A second fan said: "If I had to make a first impression guess, maybe Boyz II Men?"

Another agreed with Robin’s guess which was based on Nick’s former boy band: "I loved the 98 degrees guess.' A fourth fan said: "Now, that's how you start off the season!!!" A fifth fan said: "Those buffalo’s can SING!"

Other guesses made from the judges were boyband B2K specifically member Omarion and Earth, Wind and Fire. Their guesses were also based on the clue sent by Ambassador Nick. He sent a gift of a golden crown.

Fans are going to have to keep on speculation as the Buffalos made it to another round. The celebrity unmasked tonight was former NFL quarterback John Elway which The Hangover actor got correct. John was the Leaf Sheep. The Masked Singer is on Wednesdays on FOX at 8 p.m. EST.
