Rob McElhenney put in his place after awkward Tom Brady fight confrontation

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney was cringing in embarrassment after Tom Brady was shown a clip of him threatening to break the seven-time Super Bowl champion's arm.

Brady and McElhenney have engaged in friendly competition since they both invested in British soccer clubs. McElhenney and fellow Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds bought Welsh team Wrexham in 2020, and Brady followed suit last year by acquiring a minority stake in English team Birmingham City.

The teams have had opposing fortunes under their celebrity owners. Wrexham have enjoyed back-to-back promotions since the actors bought the down-on-its-luck club, rising to League One – the third tier of the English soccer pyramid. Birmingham, meanwhile, was relegated from the Championship last season, meaning the teams are competing in the same league and they crossed paths at the Blues' St Andrews home last week.

  • Brady and McElhenney traded friendly barbs ahead of the game and met on the pitch ahead of the game when Brady was shown a clip from the first series of McElhenney's sitcom "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia". In the scene, McElhenney's character said he was going to round up a group of his friends to beat up Brady, such was his hatred for the then New England Patriots superstar.

McElhenney was clearly uncomfortable as Brady reacted to the clip in a video uploaded to Brady's YouTube channel. "What's wrong with you? Why would you write that? Get him out, I want him out of here," Brady joked as McElhenney tried to explain himself.

The Wrexham co-chairman told the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback that in the next part of the scene, his wife made it clear in no uncertain terms that Brady "would kick your f------ a--."

When the game began, Wrexham flew into an early lead with Jack Marriott stabbing home from a corner. But Brady's Birmingham, which smashed transfer spending records in League One over the summer, would have the last laugh.

Record signing Jay Stansfield, who cost a fee in the region of $20 million from Fulham on transfer deadline day earlier this month, equalized before half time, and he got his second goal soon after the interval to put the Blues in command. They made sure of victory 30 minutes from time with a goal from Tomoki Iwata.

Both clubs have made a flying start to the season. Wrexham sits top of League One on goal difference, with Birmingham level on points having played a game fewer. The clubs will meet again for the return fixture at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground on Jan. 25, and the playful jibes are sure to continue in the meantime.
